You might have heard about the new plastic dispensers that Samuel Gawith have introduced recently to replace the old small tins. What I didn't know until a few days back was that they've also introduced new large (approximately 20-25g) vacuum sealed tins.

I called them up a few days ago to enquire as to whether they still provide mail order. They do, but there's a couple of minor catches:
    - Minimum order of a case of 16 tins.
    - They're not too keen on providing a mix of different sorts as each order would be put together by hand.

After a bit of haggling, they (sort of) agreed, as a one-off, to send out a package with four tins each of four different flavours. I figured this was good enough and started planning an order of my four favourites.

Thing is - I'd really quite like to try some of the flavours they have which are harder to get hold of, such as the Irish 'D' Original. But if I don't like them I'd be stuck with 3 or 4 ounces of snuff !

So - would anyone like to chip in for a group order of some nice fresh sealed tins of Sammy direct from the mill ? Either at least 4 tins of your favourite or, preferably, maybe we could come to an agreement on splitting an order to get a variety.

I don't want any cash in advance, but to give you an idea of the cost I've tried to come up with an estimate, including VAT and postage from Gawith's to me, and the cost of jiffy bags and postage from me to you. I reckon four tins would be a maximum of £11.00 to the UK. Add about £0.70 to that for European postage and about £1.70 for postage to the States.

i'd be in for yellow, red, or blue crest. Ive only tryed the yellow so far, but it is an amazing snuff and one of my favs so im guessing the other crests may be as good.

The Red and Blue Crests are different to the Yellow Crest. The Red Crest is essentially a red rappee and I do like it. The Blue Crest has a flavour I can't quite put my finger on. It isn't bad but not a favourite of mine. It may work better for you of course.

Walrus1985 and I have been discussing an order, so with Snuffster and Ejacerooni on board it looks like this might make four of us. Cool !

The Walrus and I agree that one of the must-tries is Irish 'D' Original - this is the toasted version of the Irish 'D' Light and if it's anywhere near as tasty as the Light it should be a damn fine snuff. I guess this will suit you Snuffster ? Ejacerooni - would that be okay as one of your four sorts or do you want Crests only ?

Regarding the Crest/SP types, I'm slightly confused about the Samuel Gawith website listings as they state that each of them are available as both "plain" and "scented".

I've tried the SP No 1 High Mill and the Yellow Crest and really enjoyed them both, but I've no idea whether they were scented or plain as it gave no indication on the tin. Does anyone know how the plain and scented compare ?

yes i agree the toasted is a must. one of the crests is fine. the yellow crest to me smells like a farm minus the poo, reminds me of hay and the country and nuts. has any1 tryed their sp scotch? also, i think kendal browns are supposed to be good.

Is 4 guys your max or are you selling each tin in the case separate? If you are I wouldn't mind getting my hands on an Irish D Original. I loved the Lite version, let me know!

Quick question - has anyone here actually visited Samuel Gawith's place in Kendal? Ditto for Gawith & Hoggarth.

I ask as I'll be driving that way a week on Friday and I'm thinking of visiting. Is that possible? Do they have a retail counter?

Dajawu: The more the merrier pal. I must admit, I can't wait to try the toasted Irish myself. Since there's enough interest I'm probably going to order two cases so there will be plenty to go around. Even if I'm stuck with a pile of snuff, they'll be vacuum sealed so will last ages anyway. No such thing as too much Samuel Gawith in storage LOL.

It looks like the order will include:
    Irish 'D' Original
    Yellow Crest
    Red Crest
    SP No 1 High Mill
Kendal Brown (I haven't tried any of these - any requests for a particular sort ? There's four listed - KB plain, KB scented, KB Special and KB Original).
Special M (I haven't tried this either but it's listed as almond flavour and I really like Wilson's Royal George and Smith's George IV so I'm hoping for a SG version of these)
X-Blend (not only does it have a great name but I reckon it might turn me into a superhero. "Radioactive spider bite ?" "Nah, an overdose of X-Blend")

Ermtony: I've never been to the mills but I'm very jealous ! Let us know how you get on.

Will do! It's too good a chance to miss! Guess I'd better email them and find out what's what.

All the KBs are good and all have their own character. Never tried the X-Blend or the Special M. I can see they'll have to go on my "must try sometime" list.

Oooh, can I get in on it if I only want 2 tins?

I'd love to try Irish D Original and Special M.

As for the crests I have tried blue and yellow and they are very similar to me. And yes, they smell exactly like farms.
  4.  # 13
I'd also love to join in on some Irish D' Original all I got is Irish D' light and as any of the more plain varieties which sounds like you getting quite a few good ones!
  5.  # 14
Ejacerooni: OK, I'll add Scotch SP and strike the No 1 High Mill.

Kunugaa: Sure thing, I'll put you down for 2 tins. I only gave a rough estimate for 4 tins to give a idea of the cost including postage.

Celticsnuffer: No problem, I'll order some extra tins of the Irish 'D' Original.
  6.  # 15
Sounds great just keep me updated on what you have and I'll be willing to send you a money order or paypal if you have that option for any of the snuff you have an abundance of!

    Cheers,
    celticsnuffer aka Rob

    I've just placed the order.

In an attempt to please as many people as possible, I ended up going for the following:
    Irish 'D' Original
    Kendal Brown Special Unscented
    SP Scotch Unscented
    Yellow Crest Scented
SP No 1 High Mill Scented
    Special M
    X-Blend

(The scent in the "scented" snuff is apparently the traditional SP light citrus flavour).

Unfortunately, the mill is currently out of tins !

They're expecting to be able to send out the order early next week. I'll keep y'all posted.

    I've answered my own question....

Just phoned Samuel Gawith's. While they don't have a shop as such at the factory, they've no problem with customers calling in to buy snuff or anything else. Good news indeed. I'd better make sure I have plenty of cash on me a week on Friday!

Might just do that, though making one snuff buying visit will be testing my wife's patience. And then I may call in at Greens of Leeds en route as well..... :D

I discovered a friend of mine grew up right next to the Wilson's mill. His dad used snuff whilst giving up smoking and got his snuff directly from the mill.

Maybe you can stop off there as well, only a little further down the M1 :)

I live in Leeds, it's good having Greens nearby but I still buy most of my snuff online. I have been going in there regularly for a few years now, even before snuff and pipes as it was the only place I could get the rolling tobacco I smoked.

That's right. I'm only about 5 miles from the ferry terminal - takes you straight to Rotterdam and that isn't far from the mills.

Tempting to go via Sheffield.... I have relatives and friends there as well! Most of the relatives are in or around Handsworth though, not Sharrow.

So that's a visit to two mills in Kendal via Sharrow, Leeds and Rotterdam.

    I'm sure she won't mind :o)

Probably not, knowing her. And I should do after 32 years together!

Update - I called the mill today to see if there was any progress on the order.

Apparently they got a delivery of tins at the beginning of the week, but all the lids were too tight and they had to be returned.

It'll be another few days at least :o(

    Teething troubles I guess.
  11.  # 26
Finally arrived ! This has to be the best package I've received in the mail since I took delivery of my inflatable woman ...

There's good news and bad news though.

The bad news is that the tins haven't been vacuum sealed. I had a bit of a garbled conversation with the bloke from Gawith's and I'm not sure why this is - presumably something wrong with their machinery. Of the two tins I've tried though, the snuff is obviously nice and fresh as it's straight from the mill.

The good news is that to compensate for the long wait and the lack of vacuum sealing, they gave me free postage, so the price was a bit lower than expected.

    As a reminder, here's what I've got:
    Irish 'D' Original
    Kendal Brown Special Unscented
    SP Scotch Unscented
    Yellow Crest Scented
SP No 1 High Mill Scented
    Special M
    X-Blend

Since I got free postage, I'm going to cover the cost of the packing to send the snuff on, so the following costs include the postage and PayPal charges. (If you're from the UK and want to pay by cheque or bank transfer, let me know and I'll remove the PayPal charge).

    UK
    1 tin £3.23
    2 tins £5.57
    3 tins £7.61
    4 tins £9.65
    5 tins £12.09

    Europe

    2 tins £5.69

    Rest of world

Reviews for Samuel Gawith SP Scotch

I don't have the other ones yet, so hopefully when people get their tins, they will review them.
