Thanks for reminding me about the new snuff review website - I've registered but not got round to putting any reviews up yet.
Of the new ones I've tried, the SP Scotch Unscented is a stand out, possibly because I just wasn't expecting it to be this good. It's a fairly fine grind with medium moisture and a lovely plain tobacco taste. Reminds me a lot of Wilson's Irish 'D' Toast in terms of grind, colour and moisture, but without the citrusy note.
The X-Blend is perfumed but it's a pleasant, refined perfume - a bit like French Carotte in fact - and not the downright nasty perfume you get in some Gawith Hoggarth offerings. Fine grind and medium moist. I'm not a big fan of perfumed snuff in general, but I'll definitely finish the tin I opened.
The Irish 'D' Original is another exceptional snuff. Very fine and dry (you get a terrific little cloud of snuff whenever you open the tin) and a delicious toasty tobacco flavour. Not QUITE as enjoyable, perhaps, as the Wilsons and F&T toasts because it's missing that buttery, nutty taste. But still a very, very good toast indeed - I even prefer it to their Irish 'D' Light, which is really saying something.
Haven't tried the Special M yet but I'll let you know what I think when I crack open a tin.
Special M is wierd. It tastes slightly like marzipan, but only slightly. I love the X blend and Irish Original, it is more earthy that Irish D Light. X Blend is just a nice perfumed flavour, can't put my finger with what exactly but really nice and refreshing.
Finally had some time to myself last night to try out the other flavours I bought.
As Stefan says, the Special M is a little weird. I can't spot the almond flavour at all, which is a little disappointing as I love Royal George and George IV. Top class tobacco as you'd expect from SG but I doubt I'd order it again.
The KB Special Unscented is as expected coarse, dark and fairly moist. Reminds me of unflavoured pipe tobacco. Very tasty, but the only problem I have is the problem I have with other coarse snuffs - the darn stuff just won't stay in my nose !
Yellow Crest and No 1 High Mill I'd both tried before and really enjoyed. These are the scented versions though, with a added floral tones. It's a background note, thankfully, and doesn't overwhelm the tobacco flavour.
Now all I need to do is find some time to start filling out some reviews on snuffreviews.com :o)
Celticsnuffer: Yeah loads left, only Walrus1985 has expressed an interest so far ! Not that I'm remotely upset at being left with a shiteload of Samuel Gawith in the garage. It's really nice to have it available in decent tins at last - the previous ones were a real pain. The new tins are exactly the same as G Smith and Sons', which would make sense as Ermtony has pointed out that eight of their snuffs are made by Samuel Gawith's. Wonder why they didn't introduce the new tins for their own snuffs earlier ?
Anyway, cost for a tin of each of the seven delivered to the States would be £19.40 including the PayPal fee. Whisper me your details.
My X-blend and Irish D arrived yesterday - thanks!!!
The Irish D is great as expected, very similar to the light version but, well, different.
The X-blend is just plain wierd. The smell reminds me of B&Bs for some reason. I like the spiciness it has to it, very strange in a perfumed snuff.
The tins are also great, they are just smaller versions of pipe tobacco tins. Made out of the same stuff and with the sealing ring around the inside of the lid. They aren't screw on which is a shame as they can be a bit fiddly. I might have to start badgering somewhere to stock them rather than the plastic dispensers.
I don't like the new plastic dispensers much. The old tins weren't very good either but at least you could pinch from them. It would indeed be nice if we could buy the new tins online somewhere - one of the reasons I suggested the group buy was that nobody seems to sell them.
(Another reason was that I really wanted to try the Irish 'D' Original, which is strangely difficult to get hold of !)
The group buy seemed popular enough, so maybe we can get another going in a couple of months if there's still no way to buy them on t'Internet.
you can change a accidental none whisper to a whisper by editing your post then typeing in the name of the person you want to whisper to in the "Whisper your comments to" box if you want to delete a post whisper it to yourself.
Just got some tins from Farley! I got Irish 'D' Original, KB Special, and SP Scotch. Wow the Irish 'D' is finely milled! It is really light and pleasant. I haven't seen a toast like that, it's lighter in color than my other toasts, a beautiful tan, and dustlike. Very pleasant on the uptake (easy to over do it though) and very delicate. I still have a cold but I get a very light vanilla (is that tonquin perhaps?) and spice notes. Nice lingering note.
