    Hi All,

I have never had a proper snuff box, I tend just to carry around the tins which the snuff comes supplied in.

However I this morning took delivery of a very nice little Walnut snuff box (Thanks Tim)

It is just a nice size, and I was really surprised at how well the box keeps the snuff moist. I really thought it might dry out really quickly being wooden.

Also I never realised how much more enjoyabl it is to use snuff from a proper little dedicated box.

Congradulations! That’s sweet, very nice design! I like the photos a lot, because you gave a Little Sniffer a chance to see the inside of the box (thickness of wood).
The view in your hand for size evaluation. Thumb Up!

    Very nice!

I have a similar one (different design though) also from Tim. Nice tight-fitting lid and holds just the right amount of snuff.

I have a similar box I ordered from snuffstore but it has a different design on it. The boxes are a nice depth too aren't they? does yours have the two tiny magnets at one end to hold the lid closed? I only noticed them after about a week of using the box. The only tiny criticism of these types of box is; When you slide the lid open it tends to have snuff stuck to the bottom of it which then tips all over your clothes and the floor. I only use this snuffbox when i'm going out for the day so I don't ruin the carpet!

Apart from that they are really nice little boxes!

    Hi Lazarus,

No mine does'nt have any magnets. I understand that the lid gets a bit looser with use, to be honest I prefer the lid to stay a tad on the tight side, so I have rubbed a little beeswax on the sides of the lid.

Yes Tony, the box is just a nice size for me, holds just about enough snuff for my needs.

Yes dajawu I bought it from Snuffstore. I find Tim a very helpful chap indeed, and his service is similar to Roderick's....absolutely spot on.

Kim glad you like the snuff box, like you say it is very sweet, and has a lot of character when compared to a plain old metal box. Besides a wooden box does not chink in my pocket when I walk about lol!

The color of the wood is that of the upper photo, the flash on the bottom two pics seems to have given an artificial lightening to the wood from it's actual dark brown color.

Nice box and you are dead right that snuff is better taken from a nice box, you just got to make sure you only put a days worth in there as most wood ones are pretty porous. Taking snuff from a can is like drinking wine from the bottle, ok sometimes but not as good as a wine glass.

By the way, I really recommend ebay for snuff boxes, as well as Tim's excellent shop of course. I got a great silver box for £16/$32 - Troutstroker has also had some great silver snuff box bargains on there.

Snuffster I love your analogy. I have been taking my snuff from a wine bottle wrapped in a brown paper bag for much too long now! Yes I do not use a lot of snuff on a daily basis, and do tend to just put in what I think I will take on any particular day. However since I put the snuff in the box this morning it seems to have kept it's freshness much better than if it had been kept in the old McChrystals tin.

Wood I think also retains a little moisture, so I am wondering if this does not out balance the porosity factor? Anyhow I am a much happier camper now as it certainly does'nt leak which was my main concern. I understand that silver snuffboxes can leak into the pocket, and I really wanted one which would not leak. In fact to me a leaky snuffbox would be a real pain!

I like the silver boxes, but in my hands it would become scratched in no time, and on my income the price would be very unrealistic also. I think this one is a good everyday heavy duty utility box.

Ive got quite a few snuff boxes from silver to pewter to wood. To be honest, none of them keep snuff any better than a crappy old tin. I just use an old snuff spoon to put one single days worth of snuff in there to solve this. But the main thing with snuff boxes is that they are beautiful little works of art and just make it more fun.

Although the thunderbird bottle in a brown bag has its place!

Was going to go a bit extra for a pewter one, but heard too many tales of them getting broken and leaking. Really I need something I can stick in my pocket everyday, forget about and not worry too much about temperamental hinges etc.

I just wish I could stop taking this out of my pocket and admiring it lol!

Well, its beautiful so you are just enjoying your purchase!

Pewter is too soft btw, they all bend at some point so your robust little box is a much better deal

Beautiful snuffbox snufecker. Tim at the snuffstore is wise to stock such nice products. (hee hee)
In all seriousness I hope you enjoy your new snuffbox for a long time. They are very durable. I don't know how many times I'll get lucky but I've dropped mine on the concrete floor of my shop many times and it keeps on surviving (it does have some nasty scratches and dents at this point).

I have a wooden Wilson's box, and find that it keeps snuff good for up to 4 or 5 days if necessary. I love the box Snufecker, I'm going to invest in one myself. Mine has been dropped that many times it's unreal but it still is in one piece. Also the lid does loosen with use but not too much, it is still tight enough to keep the snuff fresh and not leak everywhere. I've been using my box everyday for 18 months now, but I'd really like one of Tim's as I'm going on holiday in 3 weeks and it would be nice to take with me. I also have a metal one bought from Tim. That is good and has a nice tight seal on it, but I only use it with coarser snuffs, such as Princes or Brunswick in case it leaks.

    Hi oneforetheroad and Walrus1985,

Yes I have little doubt I will be enjoying this little box for years, again congrats on the lovely item. In fact I am so pleased I am really thinking of buying another one as I love the different types of woods. I have no intentions of dropping mine lol! Although looking at it it looks bomb proof. I particularly love the way the body is made from one solid piece of wood and not a lot of components glued together!

I would really love to be able to make something as beautiful as this, but I just got to look at a bit of wood and it splits! Never was a good woodworker.

Like I say Walrus I rub a little beeswax along the lid of mine, as this will ensure that the lid stays fairly tight, I know you won't be disappointed if you do buy one. I have seen one of the Sharrow Wooden Boxes, but to me they look huge in comparison, and would probably hold a months supply of snuff at the rate at which I take it!

Again Onefortheroad, thanks for my box, something I will really treasure.

I just sussed out why I keep handling this little box, it is so tactile, I love the feel of the wood in my hand!

It just goes to prove that sometimes the simplest little things in life can bring us so much joy when compared to more expensive items!

Hollandsk SnusdaasenullNot all silver boxes leak. If you are willing to pay for a good quality box, you can get a perfectly tight box. Here is a Dutch silver box, which I purchased on eBay. It was rather expensive, but worth the price. It has me and my friends from the Netherlands on the lid, depicted during our favorite pass time, drinking good wine at the local Bierstube :o))) It's a very fine little box, and though it's irreplacable, and I bought it for my collection, I am using it for my daily snuff at least once or twice a week.
