The tin aroma of this snuff is a pleasant balance of menthol and camphor. The camphor is strong enough to compete with the menthol for your nose's attention and it provokes a pleasant anticipation before snuffing it. It is moderately fine grind, like the other Wilson's menthols and is light rust brown in color. Upon snuffing, the tin's promise of camphor is fulfilled, and the two strong flavors of camphor and menthol compete for your nose's attention. Believe it or not, this is quite a complicated snuff, the camphor aroma dominates, and the menthol does an excellent job playing a supporting role keeping the nose stimulated and attuned to the fine aroma of the camphor. I almost don't believe it myself, but there is a third note present here of good wholesome tobacco aroma! It definitely takes a back seat to the two stronger flavors, but certainly makes it's presence known. This reminds me of a fine ground, English style Gletscher Prise. If you enjoy menthol snuffs, you will enjoy this complex offering. Happy snuffing!

    Aloha,

A nice write up, Smarvy. The photos that accompany your reviews are always well done, and add a lot to the review! I'm working, or rather, enjoying my way through a tin of SM Blue right now. Of the Wilson's menthols I've tried so far, this one seems to be the most similar to my beloved O&G.

Maybe that's a good subject for a thread. Or at least something to add some of the reviews. "If you're caught short of O&G, this is the Wilson's you want to try". I'm told the same can be said for L260/SM500. (Tom Buck/Queen's, etc.) , As much as I'm enjoying working my way through the bewildering array of Wilson's menthols, (and McC's, and , well, everyone else's) this kind of information might help the "less traveled" snuffer. Also, when one's favorite vendor is all out of a favorite snuff, or when caught short when on holiday it might be helpful.

EXCELLENT SNUFF, I have always maintained a good stock of this one and recommend any who have not tried SM Blue to give it a go if medicated snuffs are your thing you will most likely enjoy SM BLUE... GREAT REVIEW!

Wilsons Honey Menthol is also very delicious!

i find it too medicated in taste. also there is so much camphor that it makes my nose angry and it instantly blocks up. i have found it to be a good mixer. i also wish i could find and have tried 100 different concoctions to make a knock off mcog with no luck. the closest i have come was a blend of sharrow med blue with sm 500, with the menthol aspect watered down and the tobacco note of mc put in with a blend of snuff made with stonehaven pipe tobacco and rooster. anyway, sm blue is a very nice snuff for the camphor lover and would be higher on my list if i was less sensitive to it. if anyone finds a close snuff to mcog PLEASE let me know!!! i can not live without it but at 158.00 a pound here in the US, the price is killing me. with a family and two kids it is much more adult of me too use the wonderful sharrow snuffs at 36.00 a pound or what i am doing now since i am aquiring a HUGE love affair and addiction too f&t's bordeaux and morlaix which are not bad at all at 80.00 a pound. i actually disliked morlaix at first but i was out of the other one day a month or so ago and was using morlaix instead, POOF, it just got me exspcecially this time of year with cool air and falling leaves... it just has that horsebarn pumpkin pie thing going on that i am now in love with. my wife keeps telling me i smell like a baby, appearntly to her the after smell is sort of foo-foo or that of baby powder and she finds my use of it weird to say the least exspcecially knowing my personally and me being of big burley tough mountian man type whom would cringe at the idea of using or putting anything other then a match on my tobacco, the first time she noticed it, i had to go get the tin because she did not believe this aroma was coming from me, LOL.....

I have been taking allot of this snuff lately, as Smarvy noted in his original post it is quite similar to the O&G. I've had this one sitting in the back of my snuff collection for awhile because it had been a part of a large order and at the time was on a non-menthol kick. Now that spring has arrived my need for mentholated snuffs has arrived with it and I really have been enjoying this one (and the SM Brown as well). To me the menthol stays with you a bit longer with this one than the O&G. As Smarvy also noted, as you get used to it a bit, the underlying tobacco scent is there as well. A very well balanced menthol snuff. I highly recommend this one to anyone who is a fan of McC's O&G. Excellent review by Smarvy.

I must admit I have switched from Mc O&G to Sharrow SM blue; I find said snuff (excellent review btw) to be far more refreshing with the extra camphor. It does take a while to get used to the different tobacco though. Like Smarvy notes, the grind is fine (a lot finer than Mc O&G), which is a 'one man's meat' kind of thing. I personally prefer the grind of McChrystal's, a touch coarser, but what can one do? If interested, the SM Gold that Sharrow also do is a very slightly less medicated version of the blue. Happy days...

Don't use the heavy menthols too often but when I do I seem to prefer the SM 500 over the Blue. But prefer both over O&G as I don't care for that one at all.
