My two cents is that SP stands for Spanish, because its introduction to England came from the capture of a spanish frigate loaded with the stuff as cargo.
Yeah the majority of what I have read points to SP standing for Spanish. Since SP's aren't really 'plain' it seems using the word 'plain' wouldn't fit. The SM could stand for 'Sharrow Mills'?
On Wilsons page SM is said to stand for Sharrow menthol. I think that SP stands for spiffy pirate since it's the most entertaining explaination I've ever heard.
Hi Matt,
Welcome to the forum. Mr Lawrie is my Father/Dad/Pop everyone here calls me Roderick.
Hope you enjoy the samples, although I have to apologise as there may be a slight delay in them being posted. This is due to our launching 2 new toasts at the weekend and us being a little busy at the moment. Typical British understatement!
Hi everyone! I'm a former pack-a-day smoker who quit using Swedish snus. My first real nasal snuff experience was with Pöschl's Gawith Apricot when my snus ran out several months ago. I didn't care for it too much. After having a chance to try some Toque flavors, I'm sold. The menthol is my current favorite, and blueberry and chocolate are really good too.
fixin2, another oral tobacco you might like is Stoker's looseleaf, available in many great tasting long lasting flavors & its not too strong either. Also stitch is working on a great oliver twist alternative.
fixin2, they are not sickening sweet, They do have a sweetness but in a good way that compliments the flavor, not in an overloaded molasses way that redman is. 3 of my favorites are the peach, apple & butternut, also the tropical is pretty good.
Here is the Fred Stoker & Sons catalog you might enjoy. Place your request here. Its full of tobacco of all sorts.
Oliver t. is not my #1 smokeless choice, but I do enjoy it, and I must say they and their American importer are mighty quick and responsive. I finally found Twist on the shelf of a cigar shop about an hour away from me after wanting to try it. I got home and realized that 2/4 of the OT's I got had expiration dates of well over a year ago. One was marked best by Feb. 2007. I emailed the site, as they encourage people to do so. I got an email the next day from Mette Nygaard who'd cc'd her US importers. I'd asked if I could send the unused expired ones back, the importer guy Casey Cooper offered to send me 1 of each of their flavors, fresh, for free. He also cc'd 2 of his employees asking them to let him know asap as soon as they'd sent my fresh tobacco, and said they'd call and talk to the shop where I got it, making sure the retailer was aware of their exp. dates. Little Off-topic, but I thought that was a fine example of the kind of customer service that seems rare these days.
Please allow me to interdooze myselphe :) I'm Nicholas in Denmark. Former bass player in a certain 80s new wave rock band :) Now a Historian and Eastern Orthodox Theologian. Got introduced to Snuff while living for 3 years in NE PA. I first tried out a variety of chews, which didn't really sit with me, and then I tried nasal snuff. I hated it at first, but could not forget about it, and when I came back to Denmark having graduated last year, I decided to give it a go. I quit smoking last october having been a heavy smoker since 1976, and I do not miss it. I can smoke an occasional cigarrette, but only when someone offer me one, and my attitude towards tobacco has changed from that of an addict to that of a fein-schmecker. Snuff taking also has both a historical and cultural past which I find absolutely fascinating.
hi all im dave from lincoln uk , im 32 and am currently a newbie to snuff . I have tried a few varietys and this site has helped me understand and learn so much so thank you all ! I am also giving up smoking and finding it easy using snuff , anyway im trying to get away from menthol snuff . So i orderd myself some sp high dry toast tonight and a vanilla one which looked differernt not sure what it will be like but still im looking forward to my delivery of high dry toast i feel like its christmass again waiting for the post , anyway thats me hi to everyone here and its a fantastic site which im proud to be a new member of . . . . . .
just to add the vanilla one is made by toque ? Maybe spelt wrong so forgive me if it is , one question i do have is their any limit to the amount you can use in a day ? Also is it a must to clear out your nose after every use ? Its kinda hurting my nose wipeing it out with tissue every time . Thanks everyone
No need to wipe it out of your nose every time, davec32. If you need to blow, blow, and other than that everything is okie dokie. Some on this forum like to use saline nasal spray to hydrate their noses, but I never bother and never have trouble.
Snuff makes my nose run so that i have to blow and it generally cleans me out. After a good blow I usually wait 15 or 20 minutes before taking another pinch. I probably go through 1 - 2 grams of snuff a day on average.
dave32 that is right best way to learn. Ask a question. Plus it isn't like enough people snuff localy almost anywhere to just pick up the finer details through observation meaning thank the internet lords this page exsists at all. We've all learned a lot of really helpfull stuff just by asking silly questions.
Tris - good luck! I tried to suggest snuff to my mother, who has been chain-smoking since the 1950s. However I found out that her addiction is not so much the nicotine, but rather the ritual of lighting up! She thinks something terrible will happen if she doesn't light-up, so it's much more of a psychological thing than a tobacco thing. She knows that I quit like you overnight, and am very happy to pinch instead, but her mind is locked on the lighting up! I think there is a distinct difference between how cigarettes and snuff affect you mentally. I just mention this, because even though the desire to help a smoker quit involves also this mental addiction to ritual. Ooops - by the way WELCOME! :o)
thank you yes it has been easy to not smoke but felt like something was missing using stuff so i got thinking about addiction and that addiction is supported by every day things like a cup of tea or coffee so i now have my snuff with my drinks or walk in the garden (were i used to smoke ) and its been even easyer to give up smoking i feel healthy now and alert and kinda getting an urge to snuff now not cigs . Only prob i face is a dry nose but i can deal with that i got some gawith apricot snuff which is different and may take getting used to im trying to get of menthol snuff as i used to smoke menthol roll ups . Im excited about trying high tea toast when it arrives . . I find that most shops in town sell menthol only which i think will change as more and more people quit smoking and move onto snuff i only hope that the goverment dont start to catch on and start to tax snuff as highly as cigs !!? .
I'm a young (18 yrs) snuffer from Poland ;) My favourite snuff: -Paul Gotard (most: Rasberry, apricot, lemon), Toque (most: chocolate) and Gawith Apricot (Poshl)
I'm going to be an historian in future, so my hobby is connected with this. I love polish nobles (Poland in XVI-XVIII century), snuffing (polish nobles were snuffing all the time - so I keep the tradition ;) ), RPG games ("paper" not computer), harmonica, weapons, wild west etc. ;) I can say that I am universal man, I've got many hobbies and many things interest me :)
