I've been on a quest this last few months looking for suitable silver snuff box suppliers. Finding a box specifically made for snuff has proven to be a bit of a headache. The job has been harder than I thought, most boxes described as silver snuff boxes are actually pill boxes...
I think I've found the answer - a UK based silver smith who still manufacturers .925 sterling silver snuff boxes. The problem being is that I've now got about 15 or so to choose from. It's like walking through a parched desert and then stumbling on 15 waterholes at the same time!
I've listed three of them here silver snuff box, but need your help before ordering any quantities.
Is it worth me stocking these items? What would you expect to pay for a sterling silver .925 snuff box? Would people actually buy them?
From a Snuff Store point of view, the initially order outlay will mean quite a large expense 'cash wise' to be able to obtain a reasonable wholesale price from the manufacturer. I obviously will be happy to take this 'risk' if the consensus is positive.
I like them, I would purchase them when and if I had the money. I always wanted a nice silver snuff box but had a hard time convincing myself to spend the money on something that I know I would wind up loosing. If the price is reasonable I would concider purchasing one or two.
On looking at the wholesale prices, retail would end up I imagine somewhere between £50 - 60. The round silver box that reminds me of a Ozona Raspberry tin at the low end, the other two rectangle boxes at the high end.
I'm sure something very like these were being sold on one of Troutstrokers links (possibly 'enchanted silver' or something) for less - they look identical. Walsh brothers do a 'snuff' box - on their pill box section under reproduction silver, but sold as a snuff box - for under £50, I have one and they are very good. TS had a whole bunch of companies that he found that may be of use to you.
Either way, I would always be interested in silver snuffs, so good luck
Yeah those are the 3 that I pointed out from Ari D. Norman. I do have the plain silver rectangular box. I love the box. Its a beautiful piece of silver. The lid opens and shuts with a snap and seals tight. Here are the pics of it actually in my hand so you can get a better look at it. I would recommend if someone is looking for a silver box, to go with one of these made by Ari D. They are quality made. They look sharp and feel good in the hand. Good amount of silver as well. For the size mine weighed 32.8 grams.
style-wise I like the Plain Silver Snuff Box Rectangle - that said, I have not really been in the market for a silver snuff box personally so I can't say how much I would pay if I did want to have one.
Well I did get a screaming deal on mine. But after having it in my hand and seeing the quality of the craftsmanship, they are definitely worth the price you mentioned NoseBag.
I received Snouffstore's newsletter today and had a gander at the Silver boxes. I would definately buy one. My birthday is not too far away and if you do decide to stock them I know what I want for it. The plain rectangle for me please!
Thanks for the comments so far - excellent and constructive feedback from all.
I have placed a order for a selection of boxes and added a few more designs to see what they look like in the 'flesh' or should that be 'in the silver'? If they are good they'll go on the site, if not they'll be going back!
Troutstroker - yes that box looks identical. Just checked your link on the other thread - you paid $30 for it on ebay...? What a bargain! Trade is more than that, but in £'s GBP. It has a RRP of £70, so that's about $140 or so on current exchange rates.
You did well on ebay with that one old chap, maybe 'black belt ninja' level... LOL!
As mentioned in post above, I imagine I'll be able to list them at way lower than RRP.
Will post more pictures up when I have them. They should be here by Thursday 20th March fingers crossed. But then again with the bank holidays it may be early next week.
It was such a good deal because it came from a store that was going out of business and they were selling all their leftover stock on ebay for whatever they could get. There is about $30 worth of silver alone at the current silver price, not to mention all the work gone in to make it. Ari D. Norman does do some great silver work. They are definitely high quality.
Yeah that was most definitely a ebay bargain mate.
I love the ebay antique snuff box category. I'm equally as bad with the old snuff books... I've been luckly this last few months with a few book bargains. Got a really battered copy of Dean Snift's 'A Pinch Of Snuff' the other week for way below what it should have been.
My wife is always telling me off for indulging my collections!
