Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum, but I have 'lurked' many times. This place is great for a novice snuffer seeking guidance, so I hope you won't mind me asking a couple of elementary questions.
I have tried snuff a good few times in the past, but only as a 'novelty'.
More recently, I have been a little more determined to learn enjoy snuff, mostly due to the smoking ban in the UK.
I'm a smoker, and as I recall from my long distant past, I didn't enjoy it the first few times I tried it. For some stupid teenage reason or other, I persevered with it until I was hopelessly addicted! Now if I can persevere with smoking, I told myself, why can't I persevere with snuffing too? I am frank enough with myself that I admit that I simply am not ready to quit smoking, and thus to attempt to do so would be deceiving myself, and doomed to failure.
This now leaves me with a problem. Big brother has made smoking difficult for me, so I need an alternative source of nicotine for such instances as long train journeys, busy times at work etc.
With this in mind, and having tried several 'nicotine replacement therapies', I thought it was time to give snuff another go. The problem is, that all the snuff I have tried in the past has been with Hedge's 'the snuff' L260. Well, i think 'LD50' would really be a more suitable name! I don't like menthol, and I find that snorting it into my nose hurts, makes me sneeze, and makes my nose run. I discovered this when my Grandad bought me some tobacco- free menthol snuff (snuffy weiss) years ago when I was a kid and had a cold. A little research on the net showed that all snuff isn't created equal, and that there were plenty of menthol- free snuffs available. Armed with this knowledge, I marched into my local tobacconist's and asked for one tin of every snuff they stocked that was free of menthol. This may sound ostentatious, but they only had about 8 different varieties and I could see that most were marked 'menthol'
I walked out with three tins of snuff: Wilson's of Sharrow SP100, J&H Wilson No1, and Kendal Ambassador.
I tried the Ambassador first and I found it as bad as menthol, but I genuinely enjoyed the other two, which I found to be very similar.
I've been using SP100 ever since, and I often take it instead of having a cigarette, not because I have to, but because I want to. It seems that I have a preference for plain snuffs. After my success with these three snuffs, I experimented with other flavours, but to be honest I didn't enjoy them as much.
So, now I have been using snuff for a little while, I have a couple of questions.
I bought a new tin of SP100 yesterday, and when I took it, I felt like I had been maced! I had a couple of half tins lying around, and upon examination it seems that they were already quite old when I bought them, as the tins have evidence of slight rusting inside the lid. The new tin I bought is literally new, no rust, and brighter metal. The snuff inside seems a little darker and there were a few clumps, as if it were a little moister.
The problem is, I preferred the old lot! I know a dryer snuff should be more irritating, but it seems to be the opposite way round in this case. I guess the snuff could have become milder for reasons other than moisture, maybe chemical breakdown over time? Is there any way I can emulate this aging?
Next question is, do I blow my nose after snuffing or not? It seems that there are people who blow and people who don't (like in all walks of life...) but I do worry about swallowing so much tobacco, and I'm sure I have felt mild nausea a while after snuffing.
Do you more seasoned snuffers tend to blow your nose after, and if so, how long do you wait before blowing? I've seen that some people snuff as often as every 10 minutes, and that means they are either blowing their nose a lot or swallowing a good deal of snuff!
Last question is, can anyone recommend a suitable container for carrying my snuff? I have tried bullets, but they raise too many eyebrows. I don't seem to get on with pinching, preferring to pour some onto the back of my hand instead. At the moment, I'm using the container that my Ambassador came in, but I'd prefer something a little more stylish and subtle than a gold and brown box.
Thanks for reading my somewhat protracted post, and I look forward to discussing my new 'dirty' habit with you!
Hello doctorbeat, welcome to the forum. As far as frequency in blowing the nose depends on the user and the type of snuff being used. Some snuffs I use, I feel the need to blow every 5 minutes and some I don't feel a need at all. Just depends if it makes the nose runny or clogged. I would say blow your nose whenever you feel like blowing the nose. There is no right or wrong amount.
Toque Snuff has a good selection of non-mentholated snuffs. Also the Snuff Store has a pretty nice size collection of snuffs. Now for a nice box/container you can look at what the Snuff Store has for Snuff Boxes. They have some real nice ones. Also read through this older post for Silver Snuff Boxes, there are some good links there if you want a silver one.
well as for the snuff at the back of the throat that happens to everyone every now and again, but with practice u'll get less and less, so swallowing doesnt become an issue. Its really ony a small amount so it doesnt do u harm to swallow, just gives me a nasty burn. If you try to keep it in the front of the nose you should be alright.
And that just leads to blowing. Some snuffs sit in my nose and others tend to cause my nose to run. If its the former I dont blow at all unless i feel the need. However if its running i'll dab it a few times till I cant be bothered and clear it all out. Like you said its a matter of preference.
I find the dryer snuffs dont make my nose run so i hardly blow it.
To me, the more runny the snuff, the higher the nicotine hit i get. I prefer unscented fine dry snuffs, like the Spanish Jewel, Levi Garrets, and Rooster. (in order of nicotine hit for me) SJ, isn't sold in stores, and the other 2 are american snuffs. None of these 3 clog me, they just make my nose run like the dickens.
I blow my nose when it gets runny, and that's about it. I'm also a smoker and smoke about a pack of clove cigarettes a day (16 to a pack) I simply snuff when I want to for enjoyment, or when I can't smoke for my nicotine addiction.
It doesn't take long for the nicotine absorbtion from snuff, and even if I have to blow 1-2 mins after I snuff, I still get the wonderful rush.
I started with using a key, or fingernail to snuff from, moved to the back of my hand, and finally got pinching down. As I progressed, I get less and less snuff in the back of my throat.
You NEED to try the "toasted" snuffs. That's Irish High Toast, High Dry Toast, things like that. It's a plain snuff lover's dream. Also, look into American Style snuffs. They're mostly plain and give a tremendous kick. But, if I were you I'd get my hands on some IHT. Also look into Kendal Brown from Gawith and Hogarth, it's very dry and makes me sneeze regularly, but the tobacco scent is rich and fulfilling. Oh, and for a treat, get some Latakia 1860. It's a good and smoky pure tobacco.
(P.S. I'm in the same boat. I'm not a menthol fan and "flavored" snuffs irritate me. I just want meat and taters tobacco, haha)
Welcome aboard! Everything important was said: blow your nose when you feel the need, technique is the key in order not to swallow the tobacco and yes, plain snuff will probably make you happier if you do not like menthol.
HI DoctorBeat - Good advice as usual from the group.
I stopped for the same reasons, UK ban etc, and also need my fixes. Snuff has been a permanent replacement for me, now I can't conceive of buying cigarettes everyday and huddling outside or in the garden (stern wife) to smoke them.
You are obviously naturally an SP/High Toast type snuffer. Wilsons of Sharrow do a strong SP called Tom Buck - this can stand getting a bit dry whilst still being palatable. The High Toasts have virtually no moisture and give a good kick. Toque also do some wonderful snuffs - the natural and original ones are some of the best plain ones out there
I snuff every 10-20 minutes on average and only blow 2 or 3 times a day, just dont feel the need most of the time.
I would say, above all, that when you find a snuff you really like, buy it in bulk from the manufacturer. Little tins can hang around on shelves forever and despite being closed, and often taped, they will still decay to some extent and the tin will often rust. I buy all of my wilsons snuffs in 1/2 pound drums - its as fresh as you can get it.
Wooden snuff boxes will allow snuff to gently dry over a couple of days - a couple used in rotation would let you gauge this. If you are going for metal, I advise silver - not as expensive as you might think and they keep snuff better than anyhting else, imho.
If you are determined to kick cigarettes, but don't want to quit tobacco, persevering will pay off massively and you will find that snuff is far more enjoyable than cigarettes and is a fascinating hobby to boot
Welcome doctorbeat. I've also just re-quit smoking with snuff, just perservere and it gets a lot easier as the days go by. I've not had a cigarette for 6 days now and don't miss it one bit. I quit completely until about 6 months ago when I stupidly started smoking again, but this time it is full time. You can't go wrong with SP100 or Toque Original for plain snuffs. If you want a flavoured snuff which is nice and smooth I'd recommend Frederick Tranter's Country Doctor,( btw if anybody wants a sample just whisper me), which is aniseed flavoured. I got a new tin of SP100 and found it in the same condition as your tin, just open the tin for an hour or two to let it dry out a bit, it also gets rid of the "tin smell". Either that or put some in your snuff box and let it breathe the same way. I also concurr with the idea of buying in bulk, very economical and fresh too. Sorry for the rant :-)
Stefan
P.S The UK smoking ban is an absolute tw*t of a thing. Viva la Revolution!
Well done on quitting Walrus. I wanted to do it for years and wish I had thought of snuff earlier, however its great now to be able to enjoy snuff and not have to be a slave to Cigarettes and huddle in those $%^&*£ shelters that are springing up now.
I agree about the ban, but at least it made me think a bit more than I had previously about smoking and directly led me to quitting. We'll still have the revolutiion though...
Wow! Thanks for your replies everyone, you have made me feel most welcome!
I have actually looked around for high dry toast, but nowhere round here seems to sell it, so I'm going to order online. Thanks for the other suggestions too, I'll get a tin of each to try out.
As to the container, I think I may have solved that. I prefer to pour my snuff out rather than pinch because I don't like the stuff getting under my thumbnail. In my line of work, it's important that my hands don't look dirty (I'm a body piercer).
Today I bought a tin of 'red bull' snuff. There's no way I'm putting the stuff up my nose, but the container seemed ideal. It's a lot smaller than the one I have been using and will still allow me to pour rather than pinch.
And snuffster, fear not! I don't think it's a dirty habit myself, I was just referring to the opinion of some people who don't know the delights of snuff. I've got everyone at work to try it except one girl, and she won't try it because it's brown! I can kind of understand not wanting to blow brown mucus out of your nose I suppose.
She said she'd try it if it was white, but I think it's pretty lucky for us that it isn't white, or else people might get the wrong idea...
As to the quitting smoking aspect, I've found that I have cut down a great deal by accident. If I have snuffed, I don't feel like smoking, so I have naturally been smoking less. It was never my intention to quit smoking, in fact snuffing is a way for me to continue smoking without the hassle really. I'm glad I have found a pleasing alternative, as gums and 'inhalators' are just plain miserable. If I have to go for hours without smoking now, I won't feel deprived because I'll have snuff instead.
Thanks again for the warm welcome and advice, and hopefully I'll have something of my own to contribute soon.
This is from the fact sheet on the DOJ website. Heroin on the Eastern US is generally sold as white. But in the Western US its generally sold as black or brown like Yaz has pictured above.
The appearance of heroin can vary dramatically. In the eastern United States, heroin generally is sold as a powder that is white (or off-white) in color. (Generally, the purer the heroin the whiter the color, because variations in color result from the presence of impurities.) In the western United States, most of the heroin available is a solid substance that is black in color. This type of heroin, known as black tar, may be sticky (like tar) or hard to the touch. Powdered heroin that is a dirty brown color also is sold in the western United States.
I guess I'am lucky since my snuff doesn't look like herion. I guess the junkies out here are lucky too since they won't accidently get really excited when they buy a tin of tom buck.
Heroin can be brown here too (in fact 'brown' is one of it's street names) I heard of someone (on a forum I think) that got 'caught' with a bullet loaded with snuff and was arrested for possession of heroin. That's another reason for my purchase of a tin of red bull just for the container- it clearly says 'snuff' on it! As luck would have it, most of my circle of friends are solicitors, so I'd probably end up getting a good deal of compensation if I was arrested for my snuff :o)
It's interesting, you could argue that having a brown powder in your possession would give police reasonable cause to suspect you of heroin possession, but at the same time, they can't outlaw snuff just because it resembles something else.
Who is in the right here? If police were powerless to make arrests for snuff, then drug dealers could just put their heroin into a snuff tin. On the flip side, why should I have to suffer being arrested and released with no charge just because I use snuff?
It was this forum you read that on. not sure what thread, but I've had a short conversation with poo-diddy about this matter even.
Unfortunately, the police are in the right. Remember, it's guilty until proven innocent no matter who tells you what in the states, lol.
Correct, that heroin is "supposed" to be white, and usually is in the eastern states, but the farther west you go, the less pure it gets. Brown is actually an extract from black-tar heroin, and has been cleaned up a little, assuming no other cuts were added of course.
There's to many variables for anything to state matter of factly with these type of substances, all thanks to things called prohibition, and greed.
Here's a tip to keep the drainage moving forward ...Sit or stand up straight after your hit and lower your head slightly. Gravity with take it from there. I tend to blow when a I feel a drop under my nose. As was said, fine powered snuffs are very quickly absorbed, but if I use something with a coarser grind, I sometimes tilt my head back for half a minute and everything moves back up the schnozzle for a good second pass.
Thanks for the tips, I think I'm getting the hang of it now. I went to a party tonight, and I got pretty much every smoker there to try my snuff, and most thought it was ok. My friend even resolved to buy a tin because he gets the train quite often and thus has to go for hours without smoking.
Dang Yaz, that looks tasty. A little clumpy, but... Don't get me wrong guys, it looks like good snuff, is all. I can see your point, but I always carry my snuff in a plain, after market screw top tin, although most of the time I have a home-made label on it for my use. Somehow, I think it far-fetched for someone to be in public snorting heroin and being able to function. I hope law enforcement will feel this way too.
You can be very functional after snorting herion it takes a while to really kick in that way for one which is why junkies tend to use it other ways (if you can't wait a little less then 20 minutes for something to kick in you may have a problem in that area). I just hope that the police relize that if someone keeps snuffing herion every tweenty minutes are so they'll be really fucking sick in no time at all. Though the herion buzz especialy to non-junkies can be really functional in certain ways. I'd be safer at work if I did a little bit of herion then if I was lightly drunk. Though socialy I'd be a little stranger on the herion.
