Mr. Snuff plastic snuff boxes

They are on Mr. Snuff. I picked up 2 of them last order. These are very nice. Heavy plastic and they have a little hole on the side that can be opened to pour snuff out. Right now, they are on sale for $5.95. They are awesome. 6 bucks is probably the cheapest snuff box that I have ever seen. I will probably buy more very soon.

  • I bought two more as soon as the first arrived, very good value.
  • how do they compare with the bernards version? I have not actually seem them side by side.
  • In shape and design, identical and from the same mould I would say. The beige coloured ones are made from a plastic that is slightly lighter in weight. The Bernard ones are that black industrial type plastic that rubbish bins are made of.

In use there is no practical difference, but I find the Bernard one has a nicer, more robust feel to it. In normal use it would take decades to wear either one out and unless they were seriously misused they would never fail. Without doubt the best snuffboxes, penny for penny, on the market.

I have not tried any of the brightly coloured ones.
  • They are nice snuffboxes, and can't be beat for the money, but I do wish they were a bit smaller.
  • Good to know. I will see what I can do re the size.
  • Would a smaller box = smaller price?
  • @Harlequin:  it cost $1200 to set up the mold....so we have to get it right first time. I am trying to get 6 colors, maybe 100 of each. The price would be about the same I suppose, maybe a few cents cheaper if I get them a few cents cheaper per box, but certainly a box half the size would not be half the price. But they are still cheap or should I say great value for money :)

So the next question is: what would be the perfect size?

  • I agree, they are already dirt cheap in price, but so am I so I had to ask, lol.
  • Definitely half the size and in plain black (making them approx the same size as Pat Collins boxes); they could be a standard for years to come like that, like the papier mache boxes of old.
  • I just found out I can get the MrSnuff logo added....unless anybody has any objections? Naturally i think that would be REALLY cool, but I will admit to a certain bias.

Still need an ideal size. I am thinking maybe 2" long and proportionality wide?

Snuffster: are you up early, or up late? Is it not Oh-dark-thirty where you are?
  • Lol, I'm up very late, way past me bedtime.

If you had a logo on the boxes go for embossed, the first thing I did with my Bernard box was remove the sticky label that just made it look tatty, without they are very sleek. Personally I have to say they would look best blank.
  • I agree with Snuffster, something the size of a Pat Collins box would be marvelous. As they are, they're a decent size, but I think something smaller would be better and would be a nicer fit in the pocket etc.
  • I really like them as is. A bit deeper would be preferred, since my fat fingers seem to cause a bit of spillage. I definitely plan to buy more whether the size changes or not.
  • Some of the French Flip top snuff boxes are about the right size. 2.5 x 1.5  with .5" minimum usable depth

  • The very best of snuff box designs, the flip top. Probably a tricky set-up of tools and high skill operators are needed to make one, hence the only ones available these days having sliding lids, it's about time  some master snuff box maker like PC took the genre onwards.

  • I found the Bernards boxes too big to be of much use, so I'd go for the smaller version too.
  • Dude I love the plastic boxes just the way they are. I can't think of a thing that can improve them. I love this neon green one that I have.
  • I think the multi-colored boxes are around 2.36 inches by 1.18 inches x .4 inches. (6cm X 3 cm x 1 cm) I had asked jazzi_mike the dimensions a while back and he was kind enough to provide them.

The brown box one that was on the site was huge.
  • Wait, the colored boxes are a different size than the plain tan one?
  • I really would like to see dimensions included in the description for any snuff box listed on the site. After buying hte tan one I was hesitant to buy any of the others.
  • Do the Mr.Snuff Plastic boxes snap closed?
  • No, but they close snugly - they wouldn't open in a pocket.
  • Smaller? make then the exact size as a Zippo lighter. Then I can carry them in the leather holster on my belt 2.25 inch long 1.5 inch wide 0.5 inch thick .I have a sterling silver flip top 2.25 x1.25 x 0.5 and my fat fingers fit fine, The lid is 1.75 inch long x 7/8 inch wide.I have two of the Barnard's I keep bait in one and tackle in the other while fishing; They were not air tight and didn't like my snuff drying out quickly! Besides who needs to carry 25 grams of snuff around ?Also you can delete the tap out hole if it's a flip top. Less moving parts less to go wrong.
  • I think the colored boxes may be a good size. Perhaps a little deeper for us big fingered fellows...

I need to order one and see I guess
  • The perfect snuff box should hold 10g  - that's enough for anyone with a serious habit to carry around with them, small enough to be neat and tactile, ok for the stubby fingered.
  • I have metal , wood and plastic snuff boxs the Mrsnuff plastic is the only one I keep on my person 24/7 . The current size 1 3/4  x 3 x 9/16 is vary nice . another size I would buy  1 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 9/16 just a silly 1/2" shorter but I could stuff one more in my pocket . Or a 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 9/16 for when im in the tavern and need to share. Or I would buy a 2 1/2" dia. round chrome plastic because it would just look good and be more airtight than any of my other hinged metal boxs ...... But I'm sure it can't be done !
  • @slide: that is a great idea. Now I think about it, it is crazy NOT to have dimensions. I will put that on the list.

As for the perfect sized small box, what is the consensus?

    a.  2.25x1.25x0.5

    b.  2.5x1.5x0.5
  • I have a 1.5" x 1.5" x. 0.5" that is my absolute favorite.  It's a slide top wood box, and being square, I can really get my fingers inside.  It's also not as thick as the other square wood ones I have, which makes it so much less bulky to take with me.
  • The Ari. D Norman silver box I have is 2.5 x 1.25 x .5 usable depth. Kind of a cross between the two options.
  • Just measured the nicely sized papier mache box which tends to live on my computer desk - 2.5" x 1.5" x 0.75" deep. I guess that puts me in the "B" group.
  • Those old papier mache boxes were perfect. I would love to find one in pristine condition. As McCausland quotes 'A silver snuff and I parted company years ago, my standard box is papier mache, plain black' (from memory but I think I got it)
  • That one of mine isn't perfect, but it very nearly snuff proof and does keep the snuff nice and fresh. Here's a picture of it.

  • Thinking of cheap and effective snuff boxes, this one cost me just 99p (plus P&P) on eBay.

    image

It's 65mm (2.5") in diameter and about 22mm (3/4") deep with a curved underside. The lid is push fit, but a very good fit, making it snuff proof and very good at keeping snuff fresh for days. It's comfortable in the pocket too. Now if someone fancied reproducing these I am quite sure there would be a market for them.
  • Very nice Tony!

I've always dreamed of something like this.  I would love a tin like that, or one that said something along the lines of : Exquisite Snuff, Exquisite Tobacco or the like.
  • I'm sure it was a really cheap item in its day, and no doubt a promotional thing for J&H Wilson's. Cheap or not, it's immensely practical and effective. I guess a reproduction could have any wording on the lid.
  • I know that this could be done with a punch set, not sure how nice it would look.
  • A for me--I like them smaller
  • I tried to make a tin like @ermtony posted a picture of.  I used a steel punch set... horrible fail.  The tin nearly collapsed even when I placed support under it.

I have another one, I might try to etch it chemically.  We shall see.
  • I'd better take some pics with the lid off etc. Might make it clearer.
  • My 2 cents.  I've got one of the Mr Snuff plastic boxes and I do like the design.  Nice sturdy feel and thoughtful hinged lid and I really like the design of the tap hole and sliding panel covering the hole. I like to carry around more than one kind of snuff to try during the day, so I would like a smaller box though.  Keep the depth the same, but make it a 1"x1" square and I'd really go for that.
  • How about 2x1.5x3/4....bit more depth?
  • @mr.snuff I think that sounds right perfect, so you're thinking the 2x1.5 rather than 2.5x1.5?
  • That would be a good size. The depth would help keep down spillage on the sides from pinching. The volume would be a bit more than the Ari D Norman
  • I have been trialling the coloured boxes from Mr Snuff...

    1. They are a good size, take 10gm perfectly - thus I can decant a full 10gm box of snuff - and are relatively thin so slip into pocket well.

    2. The hinge is excellent, tight enough to not flop open, loose enough to open easily.

    3. The slide end (I like to tap snuff onto back of hand - keeps my fingers clean) works really well.

    5. Colours - I bought two green ones - which I really like - I am sure the other colours are good and great if you want to carry a few snuffs and need to distinguish them.

    6. Nice and robust - dropped them lots of times - no sign of wear or tear.

    7. price - really good - excellent value for money

    8. I'd say these boxes are near perfect - a much better (for me anyway) than the rather large Bernards boxes, though otherwise very similar

    9. I guess a smaller version (with hinge and slide end - essential) would be nice - just a bit shorter on long side would be fine - otherwise proportions perfect

    10. Logo on top - don't mind - embossed is better than a label (which on Bernards box immediately started to come off - but left nasty sticky film) - I'd prefer it say something like 'Snuff Box' or 'Take a sniff' or something generic or amusing if it must - but certainly not a deal breaker.

All in all a perfect snuff box - I will be buying more in other colours and to 'put away' just in case for any reason they became unavailable - Mr Snuff - thank you for having these!
