What's in your mailbox #3
  • I intended to thank Xander for his useful link on preserving bulk snuff on Mailbox #2. So...thanks here instead Xander, your advice has been invaluable along the way.

In the space of a couple of months I've become a complete snuff head. Have settled on SG SP no 1HM for bulk use. But could still could not resist the following order:

    1 x Wilsons Wallflower 10g (WILWALLFLR10)
    1 x Wilsons Strasbourg 10g (WILSTRAS10)
    1 x Wilsons Royal George 10g (WILROYALGEO10)
    1 x Wilsons Tom Buck Extra 10g (WILTOMBUCKXTRA10)
    1 x Gawith Hoggarth English Rose 25g (GAWHOENGROS25)
    1 x Gawith Hoggarth Plain 25g (GAWHOPLAIN25)
    1 x Wilsons Gold Label 10g (WILGLDLABEL10)

This is quite manic behaviour. I seem to be driven by an urge to sample every snuff ever made.
Odd mixture of the ultra plain and the ultra smelly.

    Peter
  • Lol Peter. It sounds like you have come down with a case of TAD. Tobacco Aquisition (sp?) Disorder. It won't be long before you are ike me with 250+ tins and 5 kinds in bulk.

    Stefan
  • Stefan

The drum of SG was meant to cure me of this disorder...but I placed the above order yesterday - the day the drum arrived. Onset TAD, can't help it but like it anyway...
  • Where were we? Oh yea!

@Xander - Now we have to wait and open up a sarcophagus? Some snuff is a real pain in the patootee.

@Snuffster - Thanks for bringing this thread back, it is a first stop for quite a few of us.
  • I didn't realise they were so well loved, these threads, they will obviously stay then.
  • I suffer from the same problem. I have enough stuff left over from my first Mr. Snuff order to last probably 6 months. Yet I go and order another year's supply... Tobacconia in the form of snuff, pipes and cigars is a hobby in a way that cigarettes, wet snuff etc can't even hint at.
  • Snuff is easy to hoard. After awhile, you just get accustomed to it. Your family will never understand though.
    Good order, Peter.
@Whalen: If you open my sarcophagus, you will activate the curse. I don't think you want that on your conscience. :-D
  • This is my go to thread, a bit better than the 'what's in your nose' one!
  • My "new" 30+ years old Stanwell Royal Prince #113 pipe. This pipe is without a nick or scratch, can't believe it's so old. Light as a feather, beautiful grain, it's a real charm. I've smoked a bit of Pete's Irish Oak and the result is 100%. I'm a happy man!
  • Just received my Toque order of 50g W&H and 25g Spanish Gem, plus as requested an empty 25g W&H tin for my collection. Unbelievably fast shipping - only ordered yestarday afternoon - Roderick, you've a marvel!
  • You bought an empty tin, Debbie?
  • Got the new Snuff Taker's Ephemeris in the mail today, and it looks really nicely done. Also got a CD from Singapore of one of my fave bands Rudra.
  • @Xander: No, I emailed Roderick to ask if I could buy one and he just sent one anyway. Top chap.
I've never had a W&H tin as I've always bought it in bulk.
  • I'll have a Whiskey Honey!!!
  • Xander, you mentioned that it was fairly clear that GHs 'Plain' is simply plain KB. From the order below I received everything OK. For Plain Mr Snuff has sent me 25gs of Kendall Brown, Plain. So I don't have the experiment of actually comparing anything. KB plain is KB plain. I'm not complaining at all. I like it.

He also sent a freebee: a small sachet of some kind of Indian snuff. Like joss sticks and a hint of curry up your nose. Cant see myself going overboard for this stuff. I carefully sealed it so that it cannot impart that faint taste of curry powder to the other snuffs. Interesting...

The Wilson's I ordered are great. Was quite surprised that the Wallflower does not strike me as massively floral. It's there all right but a very nice taste of tobacco too. Also the GH English Rose is less pronounced than some otto or attar snuffs I had years ago, again quite masculine.

I'm loving the Wilson's variations on a theme of SP. I thought I'd tried everything I needed, wouldn't be without these.

    x Wilsons Wallflower 10g (WILWALLFLR10)
    1 x Wilsons Strasbourg 10g (WILSTRAS10)
    1 x Wilsons Royal George 10g (WILROYALGEO10)
    1 x Wilsons Tom Buck Extra 10g (WILTOMBUCKXTRA10)
    1 x Gawith Hoggarth English Rose 25g (GAWHOENGROS25)
    1 x Gawith Hoggarth Plain 25g (GAWHOPLAIN25)
    1 x Wilsons Gold Label 10g (WILGLDLABEL10
  • Lololol Peter everyday you are ordering more, the TAD is really setting in mate. I've ordered a tin of Bureau and a tin of Radford, should be getting them tomorrow.

    Stefan
  • Stefan

Ouch. Careful! You mentioned one I haven't tried. What's Bureau like?
  • I just received my copy of the Snuff Taker's Ephemeris and even though I just quickly skimmed through it I must say that I am very impressed. From binding to pictures this is a vast improvement over the first issue and its even numbered and signed by hand. I'll be enjoying this read tonight while I'm smoking my before bed pipe.
  • @petersuki , I agree that the Gawith Hoggarth English Rose is somehow quite masculine. First time I had it was in a tap box though...ruined. Interesting fact, its also the snuff provided free to Members of the Houses of Parliament. (you probably already knew that)!

Im currently awaiting the arrival of my latest ebay acquisition - one of those bakelite snuff boxes with the geometric design on the top, I just hope its snuff proof!
  • snuffstore.co.uk appears to be hosed... has anything gone amiss w/ Julia and Tim? I believe they changed ISP's or migrated to a new server recently so I hope it's computer-related.
  • @Peter I don't know what Bureau is like I'll post reviews of that and Radford tomorrow.

    Stefan
  • @koba22 - it's a widely propagated myth that English Rose is the only snuff provided in the house of commons, the facts of the matter as of 2010 can be found here: http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/snuff

So it seems they no longer insist on any particular snuff or brand.

If the word "tin" is taken literally then the snuff wouldn't be GH at all since it doesn't come in tins, but the word may have just been used as a catch all term for a container.
  • Good link @streetcarp at £6 per tin from a local tobacconist, it sounds like they buy a tin from Smiths every now and then. It takes them 2 years to use one up too. Must be like dust by then.
  • @street carp , interesting...I know for a fact that it used to be GH English Rose, so it looks like now hardly anyone uses it they just dump whatever comes to hand in there, which is a shame. Winston would not approve. So I wouldn't say it was a myth, just an out of date 'fact'. I agree if they're only putting fresh stuff in every 2 years it must be pretty awful to take.
  • Just received my Northerner order - two days since ordering, a new record!
I got a roll of Ettan Portion, half a roll of Röda Lacket, and I'd gone for the cheap expired snus deal and got a roll of Chaini Khaini Spices WP.
  • Where did I read that account of Churchill, probably more than a little tight, sitting by the snuff box and greating fellow MPs good humourously?

Stefan: I can hardly believe that after 240 or so snuffs there are still some you have not tried. Waiting for your thoughts on Bureau. Radford I already know.

(I'm very taken with Gold Label, received yesterday. Very 'tobaccoey' Lovely. American rather than Zimbabwean tobacco, I read. In that case, long live American tobacco, - wish it was in more snuffs.
  • Bureau is a sweet/floral type snuff, which has quite a nice smell, think Royal George crossed with F&T's Morlaix and it's about there. Quite piquant in its flavour, and not cloying. I wouldn't use it all day though as its a bit sweet but nice every once in a while. It's definately a "wind down" snuff.
As for Radford's I've found a menthol that is better than O&G and SM Blue my two favourites. Its got herbal undertones and is very refreshing.
@Peter there are a hell of a lot of snuffs I still haven't tried but I'm trying to get down what I have.

    Stefan
  • Got my tin of White Elephant from the wonderfully generous Vijay, along with some extra goodies in the package today...that Vijay is a helluva guy!!
  • Hopefully in about a week the Peterson's 2011 St. Paddy's Day Edition 221! Yay!
  • After trying and loving Toque Absinthe and their Chocolate, I am waiting delivery of Christmas Pudding and Toast&Marmalade. Can't wait!!
  • Very happy with my order from Snuff Store. I accidentally ordered 3 tins of Radford but glad that I did! I'd place this 3rd in my list of favorites behind Hedges and O&G. My order arrived in under a week btw! I've given up all hope of receiving my order from Mr. Snuff placed in late Jan.
  • Three empty 14cc F&T tins from @ermtony; they're beautiful - thanks so much!

EDIT: They're not actually empty! I'd asked for empty tins and he's filled them up with the blends they're labelled for - Morlaix, Seville and Macouba. Tony, you are a gent and a half, sir.

  • @Bart The snuff community IS certainly a small, strange world! Probably the most genuinely good hearted group of people that I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with!! And I do believe Jaap may be Inter-galactic...he's certainly one of a kind!! =)

Wow...nice grab there Prismaster...I'm not much for Poschl, but from your posts, I know you certainly are. Bet you're happier than a pig in shit!!
  • Another 7 tins of Irish Flake to add to the stockpile
  • @toffeenose look a few posts back on the previous Mailbox thread at my "new" 14cc F&T Asthoroth tin, sadly empty but for a few crumbs. I beleive there is a larger F&T tube, a "small" not a "sample" size. I have a pair of M&W of that size that snuffster sent me. Its about half an ounce. Is that what you were looking for? If you find some, let me know. Ebay can be hit and miss.
  • @Xander: Yes, I saw your Asthoroth tin (and was mightily jealous!). I'm very happy with the 14cc tins as they are so much more portable, but yes, I think I saw a 'small' size tin in an old F&T catalogue and would certainly like to obtain at least one of those as well. Have tried eBay but nothing's come up yet. I'll certainly let you know if I find any.
  • 9Inch, I'm stocking up on Irish Flake, Irish Oak and Erinmore Flake. They are my very favourite tobaccos.
  • A Posh bullet thanks to the generosity of Mr. Gimpy1261!! Thank you sir!!
  • MrSnuff came through late last week with an order from 31 January. I expect it's the small-package-nonsense logjam finally breaking.
    Thanks a heap, DHS.

Dholakia Black, and F&T HDT. Biggish tins, to make the postage make sense.
  • I just won this snuff bottle off ebay, I think the price was right yet im not sure how old it is. I bought the larger Poschl bottle, he still has a smaller benard flask for sale in the pictures. Anyone have one of these or know how old they are? I saw a similiar one from the 1980's olympics ,but im not sure if they are the same.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=200584258371&si=%2BKIauEEc4gS6TvvF3eM%2Bqj2l2L8%3D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT
  • Six tins of Erinmore tobacco, that's the good news. The bad news is that customs added US$31.00 to the price. The tobacco was US$40.00, shipping US$42.00 and customs US$31.00=US$18.83 per tin. Customs added 77.5% on the invoice price. As you can see this tobacco sells for US$6.66 per tin, so I'm paying 3 times the price. At R132.00 per tin it's not fun anymore. I buy Petersons at R89.95 at our local B&M.

This tobacco was ordered from Pipes and Cigars and they've grossly overcharged me with shipping. Once bitten, twice shy!!
  • @PieterClaassen

I can buy Erinmore flake and mixture locally for £9.70-9.90 a tin. If it was any help and it made financial sense to both of us I'd be happy to ship you a few tins, either for cash or for the equivilent value in snuff. I know the basic price per tin is more than you're currently paying but I could guarantee you far cheaper shipping if you were interested.
  • @Pieter $40 for shipping is insane, they also charge that much to ship to Canada which is why I never order from Pipes and Cigars.
  • I just received my Regnas Sea Fossil snuff box in the mail. It is absolutely beautiful and I will post pics and a review later this week when I have more time.
  • 7 business days to Hawaii from Toque:

Lime Toast, Menthol, Pomegranate, Blueberry, Raspberry and Vanilla (25g each)

The Lime toast was leaky, but shipped in a bag so I got a few knife-fulls from the bag. Think I'm gonna love this one.
The menthol does what I need it to do.
The Raspberry is already a favorite- just needed a reload.
The vanilla has a nice, lingering real vanilla and tobacco flavor.
    Haven't tried the rest yet.
  • ... the Toque pomegranate needs a little more time to grow on me maybe,
... the blueberry is just what I wanted it to be. Very subtle and natural like the raspberry.

But this Lime Toast is bulk-buy worthy!
  • A 2011 St. Paddy's Day edition Peterson 211...sweet little pipe!!
  • @street carp, thank you so much for your offer!! My snuffing/pipesmoking buddy's son is going to Denmark next month, so he will have to bring us a LOT of Erinmore. But I've made a note of your offer and will take it up with you in future.

    Thanks once more.
