Just joined up today. Love the forum so far. I've been reading many of the back posts and think I'll fit in.
I've used snuff off and on for about 10 years now. I finally decided to quit using oral snuff (Copenhagen type) and picked up the snuffbox again to cure some of the nicotine cravings and am loving it.
I'm also a long time pipe smoker and have started grinding some of my non-aromatic pipe tobaccos to make my own snuff. So far the best has been a Cornell and Diehl blend called Crooner. It's a mix of Burley tobacco with an herb (called Deer Tongue) added. It makes a fantastic snuff. I've also picked up some Indian snuff from a buddy over there called 6 Photos that I like quite a bit and Honey Bee found at the corner store is also a favorite and will probably become my "go-to" snuff since it's readily available and inexpensive.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and I hope to participate in the discussions. I still consider myself a newbie and have a lot to learn.
Welcome to the community Eric. If you've been enjoying Copenhagen moist snuff then you might like Rooster dry snuff which is made by the same company, US Smokeless Tobacco Co. You will notice similarities in the two. The scent of Rooster will remind you of Copenhagen. And Honey Bee is a nice snuff and a definite bargain.
Names Chris. I'm a 4th year psychology student in Chicago but my home is Maryland. I'm pretty new here comparatively but I like to be active on the forum. It's nice to see ya here and I'm offering up a warm welcome.
Thanks for the replies and the welcome. I haven't seen any Rooster around here. We've got Honey Bee, Navy, Peach, Top, and the W (and something ?) Garrett Sweet Snuff. I've tried them all except for the Top and that'll be next on the list. So far, the Navy and Honey Bee have been the only ones to stay in a rotation of sorts. Thanks also merdock for the tip on Marscigars. I've ordered pipe stuff from them before and will have to check out their snuff selection.
I was wondering how the grinding your own snuff is going? Do you use an electric coffee grinder, hand grinder, or pestle bowl? And how long have you been grinding your own snuff? And are you currently mixing your home grind with any other brands of tobacco or snuff? And are you adding extra Vanilla Leaf to your mix? If so what is your favorite ratio of Deer Tongue (Vanilla Leaf) to tobacco?
I use a burr coffee grinder but it's not actually grinding it down fine enough for me. I think I'll have to use it and then go with a mortar/pestle afterwards. Grinding pipe tobacco into snuff is a new adventure for me and I'm learning as I go. I can't get any Deer Tongue by itself, so I'm just using the Burley/DT blend that C&D put out. I don't know what the ratio is in the blend but a little DT goes a long way...
You said you have thus far been unable to get vanilla leaf. There is s a small farm called Big Dipper Farm not far from me that sells vanilla leaf (Achlys triphylla ssp. triphylla) for about 7 bucks a plant.
If you are interested in ordering some online they charge $6.99per plant and there is a $25 dollar minimum order, plus $15 shipping and handing. they can be found at http://www.bigdipperfarm.com/
Well happy grinding. Keep us up to date with your discoveries.
I'd recommend a "whirling blade" style coffee grinder for making snuff. They have a nice side effect that makes them better than bur grinders for this sort of work.
If you grind the snuff long enough, the very fine dust will stick to the lid of the grinder. You can just pop off the top and scrape the lid, then re-lid and grind some more. It's time consuming but the result is very fine, and surprisingly consistent. Note that this won't work very well if the tobacco is very dry, it works great with a cigarette-ish moisture level.
I agree with you, The tobacco is easier with a little more moisture or it just seems to blow around into the lid. and yes the consistancy is wonderful, then dump into a mortar/pestle and and refine with other herbs and oils... MMM you got some Fine Product.
