I picked up some snuff today to try it. It was in the walk in humidor and had some rust on the outside container. I had to bend the can to get it open and when I did there was rust on the inside of the container as well. I figure that it's safe to assume that sniffing this would be a bad idea but I am also wondering if maybe I am missing something here?

    Welcome smoked1!

Some rust is quite usual when the cans are a bit older. Usually this shouldn't be a problem, as long as you don't sniff the rust. I had this with several cans, which were stored a bit to long at the retailers side.

    Regards,
    Alex

I am not talking a small about of rust though. The whole inside of the tin is covered and the snuff looks to be a similar color so there would be no real way to tell if I am sniffing rust.

Than it should not be sniffed, you're absolutely right. If you bought this stuff, you should bring it back and get a new one which you might want to check right in the store. It must have been stored there for quite a long time, or the humidor is to moist somehow. Especially metal and moist don't fit, I guess.

I went out and bought some from somewhere else and tried it. God damn that burns! I think I may have done too much. Is it supposed to burn like that?

    Hi Smoked,
If you’re new to snuff, start with as mild a snuff as you can find or try peppermint as they don't burn as much. The burn sensation you are describing is normal for quality snuff with a high percentage of Zimbabwean or Zambian leaves. If I blend a snuff with a higher percentage of Tennessee 35, Kentucky 36 or Virginia 37, particularly if they are high in sugar content, you can reduce the burn for new snuffers, but you also loose some of the rich flavour and kick the more experienced snuffer looks for. Each time you take a pinch you should notice you are getting less and less of a burn and more of the pleasant effect you desire. I’ll probably get someone disagreeing with me but that’s the fun of this forum. We have a lot of newbie’s and a lot of very wise snuffers on here.

It shouldn't burn like hell, but it does burn a bit depending on the size of the pinch. Take less and try not to sniff to strong. You might want to have a look at the Beginner's Guide for some more hints: FAQs.

You got a pretty potent snuff for your first one. The American snuffs are pretty strong. Also the harder you sniff the more it will tend to burn. Start with small pinch and sniff lightly. As Roderick was saying try a peppermint one like the one from his store Toque Tobacco called Snus Ice. Also I have found for me that the coarser snuffs with a higher moisture content like a lot of the English style snuffs tend to burn less and are easier for a beginner to sniff and to learn on when starting out. Most people but not all will graduate to the dry fine snuffs because they take a higher skill level to take.
