I wanted to learn a little more about all the members preferred tastes and maybe see a recommendation I haven't tried yet so I thought I would start this discussion.
If you were to recommend 'ONLY ONE' snuff for someone to try at least once, which one would it be and why?
My recommendation would have to be Poschl Alpina because its a very well balanced snuff thats easy to use. Very pleasant scent, nothing overpowering. This is a great all around snuff. Its smooth enough for a beginner and satisfying enough for the seasoned snuffer, I think you'll enjoy it and highly recommend giving it a try. Its pretty much impossible to find now in the US and getting harder to find elsewhere but Rajek's still carries it
If you want some recommendations, you might want to have a look at the Beginners Guide: FAQs / Guide. Else, I try to keep my profile up to date regarding the snuff in my snuffbox. Actually, I only change it, when I got a nice one in it I would recommend.
I also have to make McChrystal's Original and Genuine my vote for the simple reason that it is my favorite, and by a long shot. It's also the favorite of all (not most) of my snuffing friends here in Hawai'i (all 2 of them, I realize that takes away some of the weight of my "all, not most" statement). I find that when I run out of O&G, I actually get a little sad, whereas when I run out of any other flavor that I like, I just remind myself to get some in my next order. I actually try and make sure I don't run out of McChrystals before I can get some more on the way through the mail. I just love it, plain and simple, and the people I know that enjoy snuff love it too.
May you explain to me about McCrystal Original and genuine ?...scented or plain?...I never tried McCrystal because I thought they are all scenteds and mentholated snuffs.
Pedro from HOT AND SUNNY SOTH OF SPAIN!!!!( very hot today at my town 40ºC degrees)
You are right; McChrystal's O&G is a mentholated snuff. It has however a very different flavor from any other menthol snuff I have tried. The menthol is quite strong, but there is a complex array of other flavors that shine through and complement the menthol. I highly recommend that you try it, even if generally you don't care for mentholated snuffs.
It's hot here too, but not 40 degrees, only about 35. Stay cool!
O&G was the first snuff i ever tried, I love it to bits although i like to chop and change my snuffs around a bit. At the minute I'm using Hedges L260 and Tranters Citrus and Country Doctor. Agreed with Justin there are a lot of flavours along with the menthol. Wish it was anywhere near 35 or 40 degrees here. its not stopped raining for 3 weeks and people are still cleaning up after the recent floods, which aren't being helped by continuous downpours. But i'll be in Spain in a fortnight so I'll see some summer at last! Happy snuffing!
I continue to find that McChrystal's O&G is the snuff for introducing others, and I find it pretty amazingly reliable myself. It may be as close as you can get to a "One Size Fits All" for mentholated snuffs, though I would welcome correction and - most especially - alternatives.
However, sparing a thought for those who can't stand mentholated snuffs - and there are quite a lot of them - what about if you had to pick one plain (SP/Toast) snuff and/or one flowery/fruity snuff?
At the moment I would probably say a half and half Wilson's (Sharrow) Tom Buck + Gold Label for the plain. With a smattering of Wilson's Irish High Toast! Revision: Plain Tom Buck
For the flowery/fruity I'd be especially hard-pressed to pick just one snuff (as opposed to a blend, or successive "hits" on different flowery/fruity snuffs) but I expect I would plump for F&T Kendal Brown at this very moment. Very reliable and very distinctive. Revision: A bespoke F&T Dr JR Justice, i.e. Morlaix/Bordeaux mix, heavier on the Morlaix.
Your question does not seem to be restricted to beginners, so I would recommend Fribourg & Treyer's "Princes" as a snuff everyone should try at least once (one can!). It has a deep, rich flavor that is well balanced with some bright citrus notes (far as I can tell). The can actually keeps the snuff fresh and moist and who can resist the label? English tobacco at its best, IMHO.
Well, let's see. You're not asking for my favorite, you're asking what I'd recommend.
For a beginner, based not on my opinion, but the reactions I get from people trying my snuffs for the first time; Apparently Ozona Orange is like snuff with training wheels
For the more experienced snuffer, I would recommend something he (or she!) might not try otherwise. Something different, that he might not run into everywhere he goes, but one that he simply must try. For me, that is a deKralingse snuff. The Macuba and Pompadour are amazing, but if I must pick just one, then you haven't really lived until you have tried deKralingse Latakia Oranje.
