    Hi,

I have been using Snuff now for a few months and my favorite is Red Bull because it has a menthol and a hint of fruity and zesty flavours. Red Bull has a container with a flap at the side which opens unlike the tins that you can take a pinch from. I normally use the back of my hand or the tip of my finger to sniff. I tried rolling up a paper and doing it that way as a snorter. The problem now is if I use my hand it always ends up in my moustache area under the nose and that's a waste so only a small quantity goes up my nostrils.

I want to know the cleanest and best way to sniff it properly. I can use a snorter and know where to get them but what do you people think?

Also, any suggestions on different snuffs? I like more tasty flavors than menthol.

    Thanks

P.S. I have never ever sneezed in my whole time of using snuff, not even once and I sniff a 10" line everyday lol

I used to have a similar problem. Try pouring the snuff out onto the back of your hand, then take a pinch from there. That's what I do, and my moustache stays clean. As for Snuff Suggestions, It's all a matter of taste (pun intended) if you Like Red Bull, then I don't think you'll like my suggestions, as I consider that the most Vial concoction known to man.....lol......however, there's a rather excensive review section here, as well as over at the Yahoo site. that may help yo make a choice. Remember Variety is the spice of life, and there is certianly a variety of snuffs out there to be sampled.

Yes I tried pouring it out and then pinching from there and that's what I usually do but sometimes I aim incorrectly and a tiny quantity goes under my nose which is easy to wipe away. I tried sniffing through a snorter but I don't like stuffing things up my nose unless I'm in a hurry lol.

As for the other suggestions - I like menthol but I would prefer non-menthol and just a flavor. I tried a Gin & Tonic flavour and Whisky flavour and they were actually quite better than Red Bull. Anyway, I'll stick with Red Bull for now.

    Welcome Medders,

have a look at the beta version of the beginner's guide (Setting up a Beginner's Guide? # 18). Maybe this helps a little?

    Regards,

Example #5: 'Wrap your index finger around the end of your thumb. Tap snuff into the abyss formed by thumbnail and index finger, sniff', works best for me, as I use this method for all snuffs that come in these type containers.

If you think Red Bull is vile Merlin, you should try Chief Bull. You guys have moustaches? I had no idea that the coolness factor on this site was so high...

Medders: The beginners guide should help you out making some informed decisions about ways to take snuff, and new flavors to sample. I have been using my new Poschl Automatik-Box quite a lot lately, and it seems to be working out for me. Maybe you should try getting your hands on one of those if you are having trouble.

    Aloha!

    Chief Bull? Eeeewwwww...

I have Merlin to thank (if that's the word :P) for my sampling of this nasty stuff. Menthol plus a fake, plastic-like fruit flavor (think red twizzlers). It's fake like the Silverstone's orange scent is, but worse. Not a lot of nicotine either. That medium, medium-moist Poschl grind (while bad for moustaches!) is the only good thing about this snuff. It's the snuff equivalent of those abysmal peach- and apple- and grape-flavored paper-wrapped cigars they sell at gas stations (Phillies Blunt!).

I know, I know, almost noone buys those things to smoke as cigars, but still... (or, even so, for that matter...) Ick!

10-4 on the Chief Bull, that's undoubtably the worst snuff I've ever used. I'm not usually one to waste things, but I tossed the container after about four snuffs. It reminded me of those horrible tasting cough syrups that I used to take as a kid.

I can imagine what Chief Bull is like after smokey described it there and I have decided to cut off my penis with a rusty breadknife other than using that lol - that's a fruit snuff though isn't it?

Thanks for the warning, guys, I don't think I'll bother getting any of that one. The Red Bull has its uses, though.

Oh, c'mon, Andy, you know you want some!

How can you go on without sampling its sublime non-deliciousness? Don't you just *have* to know what it's like?

lol Rommer, it's obvious you couldn't find your eyes or nasal lining as you are a beginner.. you are a beginner aren't you? lol.

If you are not a beginner then I don't know why you were so sensitive, maybe a sensitive nose??

Or perhaps it's just that Red Bull is soooooooo vile that it's poison?

Getting back to the starting point of the discussion - taking snuff - I tend to use a little spoon a lot of the time. Now I know some of you will say that that (rightly) died a death with ladies of the Regency period but actually I think it's often better than pinching. For example, with a strong sneezy snuff like F&T's High Dry Toast, I find I simply cannot get the portion I want by pinching i.e. a small enough portion. Moreover there tends to be more waste when pinching. With a fine dry snuff I tend to take it straight off the spoon. With a very moist snuff on the other hand, such as the superb London Brown by Samuel Gawith, one can either take it off the spoon or use the spoon to place it on the hand. Either way it's a lot less messy - one doesn't get one's nasal area covered in it and one's fingers all grimy (as is all too easy with London Brown!). The best spoon I have is silver, halmarked 1916, and more importantly has a shallow circular bowl about 13mm diameter which is about right both in terms of size of portion and width of nostril. It feels nice fingering it in the pocket as I'm walking along although this does rather tend to stimulate one's desire for a snuff, often at inappropriate times!

I was looking for a snuff spoon to, but couldn't find any. I can very well imagine that this little tool might be helpfull, especially when sitting at your desk working.

I too have been looking for a spoon. The one you have, Matthew, sounds just right. I have gone to the extent of carving and sanding myself one from wood, which is working quite fine, however it does not present itself as fashionable as the silver one you have.

Snuff spoon is a nice accessory.

For a long time I used a pipe tool that cost me $2. I have even used a pen cap, which actually is a handy and affordable alternative.

Mo, I make my own smoking pipes, yet the idea of fashioning my own spoon from wood never occurred to me. Thanks for the suggestion.

Innapropriate times for a snuff? When are those? I guess I refrain from meetings at work, or when the cops pull me over, but other than that...

I use one of those $2 Czech pipe tools as well, but only occasionally. I sometimes need to melt and blow glass here at work, and I have an enormous amount of extra glass tubing, perhaps I will try and fashion a small glass snuff spoon. It's borosilicate laboratory glass, so it's pretty sturdy stuff, but I don't think I would carry it around in my pocket for safety reasons. It might make a nice little desktop accessory though! I'll try and do one up today if I can find the time, and let you guys know how it works out. I'll post pics as well.

    Aloha!

I forgot to mention how I take my snuff! I've been relying on my automatic box almost exclusively lately. I just find it to be a handy little device that doubles as pocket snuff box and massive pinch delivery system! They do tend to break after a while, but I suppose that's to be expected from plastic.

    Aloha,

Aloha Justin, Maybe Ive sparked some bit of a do-it-yourself attitude. You know the old saying, "If you want it done right, do it yourself"(or if you can't find what you want). I would love to see what each of you(..PK) come up with.

    Enjoy your day :-)

Taking snuff--I normally use the end of a knife blade. Never pinch it; too messy and imprecise.
If I am outside, I generally use my car key. Works great. No extra tools to carry.
There used to be a thing known as a salt spoon before salt shakers became the norm. That would probably be perfect if you can find one.

Interesting thoughts. It would seem there is something of a pent-up demand for snuff spoons! The one I described (21 above) is nothing special really. I just thought I'd like something nicer than the ones I was using and so went around the local antique shops. In the end it came from a jeweller that does antique/second-hand silver. Unless you really want to I don't think one needs to go to the trouble of making one, providing I guess you have access to these kind of shops. What the spoon was meant for originally I've no idea - perhaps it is a snuff spoon? Otherwise it must have been a medical spoon or measuring spoon or some sort. At any rate the important thing for a suitable spoon is that it should be round, with a shallow bowl of a fairly small size, and have a handle that is level with the rim of the spoon. In other words you don't want a ladle-shaped spoon like a condiment spoon. These are unnatural to use if you take the snuff straight off the spoon and are also no good if you want to set the spoon down on a flat surface before you snuff. I've also got a lovely spoon made of horn by the Lancashire company Abbey Horn (very near Kendal!). It is listed in their catalogue as a caviar spoon and is pictured (somewhat inadequately) on their website. Recommended.
