When i heard you talking about spoons i rememberd that it had a very small spoon that i would be able to get past the tine snuffboxhole. Its originaly used for measuring artemiaeggs (fishfood).
Here is a picture on the spoon leaned against a snuffbox so that you can see the size.
Im going to try it now. =)

That spoon might hold a pinch for a nostril. Nice picture and thanks for another idea (fish food spoon). :-)

Yes it does, and looks to fix the problem of retrieving snuff from those style containers quite well!

Nice and handy. Thanks for the clarifying pictures.

That looks really nice, Mo. Planning to introduce them to market??

I have a 2in/5cm long 0.5in/1.3cm diameter silver salt spoon (well, may be a mustard spoon, as it's circular) that is serving me pretty well, and I definitely much prefer it to pinching. However, your wooden spoon is just as appealing in a completely different way. My only reservation is that I would expect snuff to get caught in the grain of the wood a little, so maybe it would benefit from varnishing? But I love the scoopy shape.

I have to get in here. The original question was to do with avoiding getting snuff in your moustache. Try a Toque bullet, perfect measure and no mess.

The recent activity on this thread has reminded me that I wanted to try making some glass spoons. I'll try and get on that this week and let you all know how it works out. I think they would be a home snuff tool only, unless I can craft some neat little snuffbox with a secret spoon compartment... I'm excited to try it now!

    Aloha,

Justin-That would be great to see. Is it blown glass?

Adam- You are correct about the snuff getting caught in the grain at first, however I have sanded it a bit more with some finer grit sand paper, and now it stays clean well.-The scoopy-thing was fun to do :-)

We have two potentially marketable products here, don't we? (glass and wood)

There's a secondary use for snuff spoons, being to portion out different snuffs, either for blends or simply for the day's requirement. I'd guess that Mo's scoopy spoon may be best on that front, ironically perhaps even better than Jeff's Tesco measuring spoon discussed elsewhere, as it looks like it may prevent heaping. One scoop, rather than a scoop and shake, and you have your portion.

But the proof is in the pudding!

Adam, you are correct again with its use to portion out and mix snuffs. Since we have been talking about blending our own snuffs from purchased stock to suit our own tastes, I have mixed McChrystals O&G with Swisher's Buttercup-Sweet Scotch Snuff to 'Sweeten' up the O&G.(Not that there is anything wrong with either to begin with) I also have mixed in equal portions Wilson's Irish Coffee and F&T's High Dry Taost.(I really love the way these two mix together to add that toasted tobacco flavor to a scented blend) I mix these in daily portions using the snuff spoon and a Bullet that I had purchased from
    snuffshop.com in the past.

This is the very first time I've heard of Swisher's, Mo! Have I not been paying attention?

Irish Coffee + F&T HDT sounds interesting. I've seen Irish Coffee as a bit of a "novelty" flavour - very clever and definitely accurate, but not a constant. Maybe I just need to mix it right.

Interestingly the further I get into snuff, the more I find floral/fruity flavours acceptible (or even great) during the day.

Swisher is an American Comany mostly known for their cigars, however they do produce smokless tobaccos as well, which includes a good size snuff line-up. They are not as well known because they do not advertise them. Take a look around at your local convience store or tobacconist, there I am sure you will find some offerings to try out.(assuming you live in the U.S.)

Sadly I'm a Brit, Mo... well, only sad as regards American snuffs & tobaccos, happily as regards the rest!

    Aloha all,

Well, I got around to making some glass snuff spoons. I think they came out all right, not great, but all right. I put some Old Paris inside the round spoon for some contrast, but I think I like the plain glass better. These are a first run, I think with a bit of practice I could make some with a bit more polish.

    Aloha,

Pretty nice Smarvy, good work, they look great. It brings snuff taking to a fancier level. Might just have to wear white gloves with a pinky out. Haa. Now if you can make one that has a spoon more curve like a C so it will hold snuff with the tube vertical then blow a hole where the hollow tube meets the spoon then you could scoop and sniff right up tube??? I would watch using around the police, they look an awful lot like a meth pipe and might be considered contraband!!!!!! lol I'll take a pic of what I have made from plastic so you get an idea.

What gauge tubing did you use, whats the I.D. and wall thickness?
  6.  # 51
Here are a few pics of the quickies I have made that work very well. One is a plastic tube that is 12mm outside diameter and 8.5mm inside diameter. The other is made from copper rod. I just bent in tight circle and pressed into cup shape. I have the handle bent to be ergonomic lol so the bottom of your thumb rests in the loop of the handle. The nugget is 11mmx7mm so you get idea of size.

Great work! I like the idea of having snuff in the spoon. This could serve as a tiny snuffbox. You put some snuff on your hand and get it with the spoon. Very nice pictures as well!

I'll try that Trout, it shouldn't be hard to do; just hard to do really well! I'll make a couple more today and get some more pics up. I'm not around cops too much anyhow, and when I am I try not to stick anything in my nose: it's easier. I'll let you all know how it goes. I like the copper coil spoon, maybe you could wrap the handle with some nice colored string or something, green would look nice with the copper.

    Aloha,
    Justin

I had one before this with the copper spoon set into a small wood dowel handle that was tapered and wrapped with Irish Linen wrap same as whats on a pool cue. It was so fancy it got up and walked off all on its own and haven't seen it since. Imagine that. I'll have to try some more styles with some green irish linen or maybe some leather lace.

Leather lace would work good on the glass spoon handle. Just glue it all on and twist it tightly up the handle like stacked leather. It would give some grip as well as a little shock absorption.

Very nice Justin! I like the first one in the first picture(and the second picture too....they look like the same spoon?) I like the elongated scoop, with a little deeper bowl.

    Troutstroker... Is that some of the gold you where panning for in that photo of yours? I like the Copper rod, I think it best shows Man's ingenuity in a pinch! ;-}

Some great homemade spoons guys. I have also had a go at making my own. I had been looking for a double spoon for a while and in desperation cut up my wife’s silver salt spoons (well she never used them) and welded them together. This worked very well until my wife found out what I had done. Needless to say, I slept in the spare room that evening. The moral of this story is, when ever you feel the creative urge, make sure that whatever you use it’s NOT a family heirloom.
Now, since starting Toque Tobacco, what I do is put one bullet to each nostril, for me that works perfectly and gives me a little more in one hit.

This is a picture of the new and improved handle for my copper coil snuff spoon. I used deer antler for the handle and the curve is very ergonomic in the hand. I have the spoon filled with Bespoke Martian Rose, a very curiously good snuff! The whole thing from antler tip to the front of spoon is about 4.5 inches or around 11.4 cm.
