I guess you have to try snuffs known to be good so you know what the standards are. Then you have to pick snuffs YOU like for the grind, moisture, flavor, and nicotine. Those are the four variables.

hello snuffbox , thanks for the immediate response. in nasal snuff which grind is consider to be a good grind ? how much moisture content should be ? flavor is understandable but how can you judge the nicotine ? if the nicotine is strong what do you feel in nose ? what about the tobacco leaf quality ? what kind of tobacco snuff manufacturer used to make good quality nasal snuff ?

if it is comfortable to use, easy to handle, smells good and gives adequate nicotine then i like it.

it's like any other type of tobacco in that experience will have to be your guide. Just like wine the mark of a good snuff is that you like it the mark of a great snuff is that you love it, and the mark of a bad snuff is that you don't like it. The trick is to learn what makes you like a snuff and then you can pick from peoples discriptions which ones sound the most exciting to you. Over time you will get better at this everyone does.
Two prime examples of what I'am talking about in my opinion would be Packards club and Royal George to many these are great snuffs to just as many these are terrible snuffs. I love G and H snuffs I think they are great I always have a few Troutstroker thinks they are the worse snuffs ever made both me and Trout are absoultely spot on about the qualities of the snuffs. The thing is we both know why we love or hate the snuffs we love or hate and again so will you with time!

p.s. it's strong if you feel the nicotine in your body. One way to check the nicotine level is to do an extremely large pinch if you feel sick it's strong. Seriously though you won't have much trouble telling how strong a snuff is when you use it a few times as the body will know.

so far as I can tell they are all good. The scotch snuff is a bit dry, but I have had good experience with Toque, Dholakia, Poschl, Wilson's of Sharrow.... they are all good. And the WE Garrett scotch snuff is dry as a dessert, but its still good in its own way....

I wouldn't ever say a snuff is good or bad, just whether I like or dislike. I've snuffed for quite a long while now and I've never come across a snuff that I would say was bad in the sense that it was badly manufactured, but lots that don't suit my personal taste. I think Taxi snuff is the most repulsive snuff I've ever tried but a lot of people here like it so its all down to taste. In terms of how I judge a snuff, its about the nicotine level - which I like to be high as I am an ex-smoker - flavour and a nice even grind. At the moment I use Toque and Dholakia, which I think are the snuffs of the moment.

If you like it then its good & doesn't really matter what others think about it, thats the best way to judge the quality. Everyone has different tastes & thats why its good there are so many choices out there. A snuff I don't really care for might be someone else's favorite & thats what so great about the world of snuff. There is no right or wrong snuff, you just have to try a variety until you find the ones you like.

i have tried some snuff like toque , dholakia , peckard , mc crystle and many others but i find all tobacco in those snuff are different. i put all the snuff in my lower lips and tasted it. i find the all different kind of tobacco than i put in the nose. have you ever tasted like that ? i think i will quite smoking because to sniff a nasal snuff is a great experience. i would like know more about the quility products.

Trout it sounds like you have to get paggie started on Cope ;)

paggie is quite right. Tasting a new snuff is SOP in evaluating it properly. It's the same principle as deliberately smelling a new wine or tea before you actually taste it; just in reverse.

I've just been extremely busy at work for the last couple of months. And I've been collaborating on a little research project aimed at reproducing some of the lost classic snuffs like Brazile and the original Masulipatam.

Sorry I missed your question, Namrata. I just make my own snuff and do a lot of historical research & a little informal experimentation as a hobby. I'm afraid that some of these lost snuffs are too labour intensive and expensive to produce on a commercial basis except maybe as small batch limited editions. It will take at least another year to actually produce anything in the way of samples. I'm also working on using native American wild tobacco plants for snuff. Just made my first batch from a local species last week & it's not too bad.
