ok i have been thinking about this as more and more people give up smoking and move onto snuff will the goverment start to wack a high tax on it like they do cigs ! The goverment loose out when we give up and move onto snuff so what does everyone think will happen as we all know our goverment are not silly and when sales of snuff goes up i think so will the price ! I hope im wrong but think it would be a great topic to discuss here . . . Going from a post here i read about the sudden volume of new members here lately it seems its becoming more popular and thus so is sales of snuff and less sales of cigs . Discuss away do you think im right or wrong in this !

I wouldnt be surprised if this happens.. it would also be on behalf of the smoking tobacco "maffia". Some european politicians
think that every kind of tobacco should be taxed the same way.

I not sure why it hasnt been taxed the same as other tobaccos here in the UK - im only a pup so maybe some of the older guys will have a better idea as to why but i get the feeling it was deliberate to attract working class votes?
but to answer your question i do believe as soon as snuff reaches main stream popularity it will be taxed to high heaven.

Well I know the Welsh miners use to use it maybe that is why it was never taxed... Just a thought cause the government would benefit from mining so maybe it lower cause of the miners needs.

i personally believe its lower to encourage its use over cigs. as far as i know also snuff can be advertised in paper media only where as cigs cannot be advertised at all?

This is the reason I am stocking up because once Comrade Brown gets it into his head to tax it surely it will be taxed. Snuff and air are two things that aren't taxed in this damn country, one has to wonder how long this will remain so.

I've always felt that here in the States, snuff is sort of "flying under the radar". Most lawmakers here aren't even aware of it, so they haven't thought to tax it. Yet. If I get my way, and it becomes popular here, they will certainly start taxing it.

    Cheers,

also maybe due to the stigma behind snuff "only used by old people " which is so totaly untrue unless im classed as old at 32 ! Now what also annoys me is this , i was walking with my children in a park when i took a pinch . Now a family of 4 walked passed and i over heard them saying "that is so discustgng taking drugs in front of his children "its a shame people think of that first when they say you do it ! Years ago this would have never even turned a head ! Try doing it in a nightclub and see what reaction you will get glad i dont go to nightclubs ! Now getting back to the point , maybe its not taxed to give older people a break god knows its hard enough for them as it is or is it the guilt of labour closing the coal mines ! ! I have read most of the coal miners used snuff to clear their nose , either way i can see a future were you can take snuff anywere again with out people giving it a second thought ! Which also may unfortunately mean drug users find it easyer as well !

I remember reading somewhere that British tax on snuff was dropped around 1978 because it was a safer alternative to ciggies.

It was, although now I think there is a global move to hound tobacco out of existence. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was taxed exactly like cigs nowadays.

Snuff is a classical enjoyment thing in my country, really just the European Union could make problems, but i still
hope that this will not happen.

In Danmark nasal snuff is virtually unknown today! A few tobacconists will stock some awful mentholized stuff, (to make sure that no one begins taking snuff?) but snus is becoming more popular in accordance with the new smoking ban. I buy all my snuff online from England, and the price is still very reasonable. Snuff is the most expensive kind of tobacco to produce, and no doubt if smokers in greater numbers begin to switch to snuff, the politically correct EU commission will certainly try to kill it off. Several scientific reports from Sweden, New Zealand a o have been appropriately ignored by the commissionares since by philosophy tobacco HAS to be "bad", and they do all they can to promote their horrible, chemical, Nicorette chewing gum as the only alternative to smoking - which is of course not an alternative for us who love tobacco. It's like changing a pint of fresh Weiss bier vom fass for a tin-canned lukewarm diet coke!

Davec has a point. Making snuff is much less costly than making cigs. All they have to do is grind the leaves and add the flavours. With cigs there are the machines to roll them, the cost of the paper and filters. Even if snuff becomes taxed, it should definitely cost less than cigs just for this reason.
    My humble opinion.

Although with some concerted action by snuffers and manufacturers there could be some hope, after all Poschl managed to get the warning re-worded.
