I have to say that was an Opening Ceremony to remember. Has anyone else been watching the Olympic? What is your favorite event? Yesterday I watched basketball US & China, I’ve caught some gymnastics & swimming. The swimming has aired pretty late at night here. But any type of swimming I'll watch along with gymnastics. Phelps is a big interest here. China is racking in the Gold's!
I try to watch some if I can. It did catch my attention that s.korea was one of the top 4 contenders for the medals race. I didn't realize how serious they were about the games. Are you enjoying your time in korea betonente?
I was just reading that there has already been a shooting in China in regards to the Olympics? has anyone else read this? Man, How did this country win the bid ? There have been a lot of articles in the papers about the air quality and how it will effect everyone in their sport, and there is a political uprising everyday now because all the media is already there..... Just getting the torch there was an up hill battle!! This isn't the Olympics, it some soap opera.
nightcap, I heard about a stabbing not a shooting. It was US mens volleyball coaches father-in-law & mother-in-law. The man died and the women is still in hospital. The man who did the stabbing jumped off the building committing suicide right after. But they say it wasn't olympic motivated. The only one who really knows killed himself.
But things can happen in any country its hosted in. Like the 96 olympics in Atlanta that had the terrorists bombing.
I've got no real problem with China winning the bid. After all, it was China that brought the olympics back to life in 84 Los Angeles. It was really going downhill fast. After the boycotts of the 80's games, Russia boycotted the 84 games and threatened to have over 100 other countries boycott with them. After long discussions they convinced China to make an appearance and it saved the olympics. In the end only 14 countries boycotted the 84 olympics. China received a huge standing ovation during opening ceremonies from the people in the stands, I remember because I was there. It became a great success and was one of the most watched olympics and brought it back from near death.
But I think China has put on a great show this year so far as the host. And yes, the opening ceremonies were amazing.
i do not think it is fair to get into that china basing thing. china is not a western democracy and never pretended to be. all the problems were known in advance to everyone who sat down for 5 minutes and gathered his intelligence.
Granted....... to both Trout and betonente. Everyone deserves a " kick at the kettle". Can you imagine the pressure the China gov't is inder right now? I'd hate to have one of those seats!
Watching some of the boxing right now between Russia & Ukraine. Luckily with the satellite tv there is usually a few channels showing different events so your not stuck watching something boring like the Equestrian events, water polo or a marathon.
I would like to point out the only reason Canada hasn't won a medal yet is because there hasn't been one sport related to snow, ice , beer, or hockey!! Other then that we are kicking ass!! Je me souviens!!!
It's hard to ignore that China gymnast look under age. No matter what their passport says. Who made the passport? China! I don't think anything will be done about it no matter how much B%*@ing is done. Maybe a little investigation after the Olympics. I don't think they will turn those medals over. They could move the silver winners to gold. I did find it sad two world leaders in the middle of wars were chilling at the Olympics.
Kim, you might be surprised how slowly some chinese seem to age. I worked with some chinese foreign exchange students when I was in college. I was shocked when I found out the girls I thought were my age (early 20's at the time) were actually well into their 40's.
and on top of this it is fashionable to try to look as young as posible in china too. madness, but thats how it is.
ot: my beard is never accepted by koreans or chinese. it is normally just totally outlandish to them how anyone could grow a beard that makes him look older. the reason is: its fashion and everyone on tv looks like 16 and acts accordingly. and then everyone is supposed to copy that. sadly most do.
I don't watch Olympics. Partly it's because I don't think that country like China should organize Olympics, but the main reason is, that apart from gymnastics it's all boring for me. Yeah... the opening ceremony might have been great, but one Czech blogger wrote, that similar ceremenies in a little bit smaller scale are quite ordinary in China. And I do believe him, after I saw some Chinese circuses. Still, I don't intend to watch it.
did anybody catch gymnastics, and swimming tonight. Very cool when it comes to mens swimming, Phelps id just phenomenal. then again I watvhed the chinese women sync Dive also icredible. And i also have to say Bela karoisy???? Deserves a gold medal just being himself.... I mean it probably won't get any funnier than that. Bob Costas deservea a gold for supporting it. Ha ha ha......
the main problem with the opening ceremony is, that it was a huge waste of money and a disply of a degree of chauvinst nationalism mixed in that has me concerned.
if you pretend to be communist that money should be spend on the general good. decent housing comes to mind..
betonente: Agreed. This is the matter. China is no more neither communistic neither capitalistic country. It is an authoritative and selfish regime which only desire is to be the richest and most powerful. That's it.
What happen to people who have working hard and striving to be the best athletes they could be. The dream of being in the Olympics working for something most of your life. Just like ordinary people strive to be the best at their occupation. Do the athletes care where it's held? I think they just want their chance to participate and prove their skills. When it comes to Country not one is perfect. Not even the USA! We all know some athletes don’t have a choice to compete, but are pretty much pushed into it. But what about all the ones that made the choice to compete. Athletes with little chance of winning, but they are proud to represent their Country.
LOL! You guys know I can not spell. Country I corrected it. Betonenente you did it as well "Puitting", but I know what you were try to spell, It was an error.
Marxism just never has worked out in practice. Better for nations to compete at sports than on the battlefield. I have Tibetan friends so I'm not watching this dog and pony show anyway.
@Kim: Then the Olympics should be given another country. And of course not every country is perfect... but the China is one of the worst for the Olympics to be held there. I found this on the Olympics website: "The Games have always brought people together in peace to respect universal moral principles. The upcoming Games will feature athletes from all over the world and help promote the Olympic spirit." Show me the peace and universal moral principles? Isn't a freedom of word universal moral principle? Or your right to your own opinion? How this could be promoted in China? Maybe next time they will give Olympics to Cuba or North Korea... hell why not? There will be always athletes working hard and competing. Olympic is the biggest chance, but not the only one.
I have a right to an opinion and you don’t have to like it. I don’t write for the Olympic Website Thank God! If you don’t like where the Olympics is being held then take that up with the IOC. Contact them and let them know how you feel. Telling me is not going to change anything about where the Olympics is held and thats a fact. International Olympic Committee - ASOIF
