Ok, this one is interesting. after receiving my shipment from Mars and "Taste Testing" all the new goodies, I chose to stick with this for the remainder of the day..here are my findings so far.
The McChrystals web site states that the nicotine content in this snuff...sorry S'nuff...lol, is higher than normal to allow for smokers trying to quit. It's NOT...at least I didn't detect a higher concentration. Now for the Review
Medium Brown in color with some sparse light brown flecks, with a Medium to fine grind. There's camphor here...applied with a restrained hand...but it's there. Just enough to open up the nasal passage but not so much as to over power the snuff. There's a scent added, though I can't identify it. Something not dissimilar to Jockey club, only sweeter. Over all not a bad snuff, although I'm Finding it to be very clogging, and drying with a high sneeze factor. Perhaps it's just me, Just today....will it get better throughout the week?? Check back with this thread for updates.
S'nuff, to me, is "McChrystal's Tom Buck". It's got that SP kind of smell, with the light bergamot-like lift to it (but less 'bergamot' and a coarser grind than Tom or McC's own SP). The tobacco has some of that aggressive pine/sawdust/cardboard edge that Wilson's does, but nicer IMHO. It suggests a cigarette without tasting cigarretty (Maybe Virginia tobacco?) but feels a little more 'rustic' or 'Marlboro Man-ish' than McC's SP (which is quite, um, 'snuffy' and 'antique' to me...). Compared to McC's other offerings, and crtainly compared to Poschl's, S'nuff has a decent nicotine hit, not the sledgehammer "pow" that a sniff of Navy Sweet Scotch has. Very good snuff, IMHO, not the highest shelf but certainly not crap. Solid and dependenable, if not sophisticated. I like this stuff, but I also like Buck and McC SP, so this is just my thing perhaps. My only problem with S'nuff is that, gram for gram, it's pricier than the certainly sophisticated F&T. But still cheaper than cigarettes :) And I do just love the size and shape of the McC 7-gram tins. Wilson's 10g are too big, McC's 3.5g are too small... 21g is practically snus-sized... but I digress.
This is akin to dancing about architecture, eh? :P It's all so subjective. Myself, I don't detect any camphor at all in S'nuff (perhaps yours was stored too close to McC's Original and Genuine, which certainly has camphor? :P ). Also, I find Tom Buck to be more "Earl Grey tea"-like than S'nuff, but S'nuff (and, again, McC SP) are all similar.
I Guess different snuffs will taste different to different people....did i say different enough times? ;)
This is akin to dancing about architecture, eh? :P It's all so subjective Your right, prehaps my nose is just on over load from years of blowing pipe smoke through it....or from the surgery I had on it 3 years ago to attempt to correct an "s" shaped septum, but I Just can't seem to detect the subtlety's that you fellas can. :-(
...with the light bergamot-like lift to it (but less 'bergamot' and a coarser grind than Tom or McC's own SP) YES, Bergamot!!! Thats IT!!! Although...I still detect camphor although it's VERY light, almost not there at all. On waking this morning, I opened the tin and inhaled the aroma again, with a "new nose" and it does indeed remind me of Earl Grey.
My only problem with S'nuff is that, gram for gram, it's pricier than...
Merlin, it's funny too because when I first started snuffing I couldn't find as much in it as others on the boards do--or got different impressions entirely--partly because of the 30 cig's worth of smoke I funneled through it every day. Even now, I've cut down a lot and my sense of smell is *much* improved, and can get more from the snuff, but still have a "better nose" on some days than others. I've noticed that on a "bad nose" day I like Packard's Club, but on "good" day it smells soapy and not-so-pleasant. When I first tried Latakia ao1860, it didn't seem all that flavorful (!?!) for that reason.
And re: camphor, I've been trying a few of camphorated snuffs lately, so if there's any in S'Nuff to detect, my sniffer might just be ignoring it. Like when I try two different menthols in a row; the menthol seems to 'subtract' itself from the second pinch... SM 500, for instance, seems more heavily eucalyptus to me if taken after a big pinch of Gletscher Prise.
Ahhh the trials and tribulations of the nose.......we could start a Soap Opera "Days of our Mucosa.....:) Jeff, I'm not sure if there's camphor in it or not, I've sent an email off to McChrystals to inquire.
Re. bergamot: I just directly compared the scent of a freshly-opened foil packet of Bigelow's Earl Grey tea to that of Tom Buck... I think we have a match!
Distinctive as it is, I wasn't positive that it was bergamot (as opposed to some other citrus) in Buck and the aforementioned SPs--probably because I'm used to smelling bergamot mixed with tea and not tobacco.
Let us know what McChrystal's has to say! Camphor or not, the S'nuff product description implies it's unscented, but I'd swear it IS scented. But it's pretty good, regardless. :)
i recently tried the mcchrystals s'nuff too. its an ok snuff, but i didnt notice any extra kick to it. i think its quite possible a sales pitch for those trying to quit smoking.
If by "extra nic kick" you're thinking something along the lines of "stronger than Rooster", then S'nuff sure doesn't have it. :P But if you're comparing S'nuff to McChrystal's SP, its closest relative in their product line, then S'nuff definitely seems stronger nicotine-wise to me.
Oh, and if you like camphor (as I do) then you should try Bernard's Amostrinha (which I tried thanks to a generous gent who hangs about here). It's all camphor, all the time, unlike most other camphorated snuffs (like the delicious McC's O&G) that contain menthol and sometimes eucalyptus.
