I am new to the world of snuff and would like to know how to keep my snuff fresh. I have about eight of the 7-10 gram containers. I dont go through itthat fast so this stuff should last me months. I have it in the fridge right now. Will this work? Any suggestions?
Not sure if the fridge is the best place. ( my 2 cents) The fridge doesn't really keep things fresh, it just retards the growth of bacteria/yeast for a period of time. I would just keep the tins in a spot out of the sun. I keep mine in my writing/ computer desk. I then place maybe 1-2 days worth in my wooden box and keep it on hand. refill when needed. This will help keep the snuff in the tin fresh longer, because I'm not going into it every hour or so. There are posts here about ways to "re-freshen" one's snuff. Who's got one of those?
I put snuff I'm not currently using, or which I am storing, in ziplock bags with as much air excluded as possible. You can get the bags in sizes to fit any of the commercial tins or boxes. Then most of it gets stashed away in tupperware type airtight boxes and then put away in my snuff storage drawers. It seems to keep pretty well like that. It's reasonably cool in those drawers which certainly helps.
i bought a humindor from cheap humindors dot com. but if u dont wanna spend the money get some eletric tape and tape the outside of your tins. make sure you sotore them in a drawer away from light and influcts in tempature. the ones u are taking out with u put some in an empty tin and take that with you. should help perserve ur snuff.
A fridge works as I have used it in the past. The freezer is actually better than the regular fridge. But if your going to store in the fridge or freezer, put snuff into individual ziploc bags first. What I do with the ziplocs is I leave it open just a small bit, then I suck the air out and quickly seal it. This creates sort of a vacuum seal. Tupperware works good, get the kind you can 'burp'. Also the kilner style jars work excellent. But the biggest factor is to keep out of sun, and keep in a place that doesn't fluctuate a lot in temperature. Also you want to keep the snuff in an area where its not going to be exposed to other strong scents as the snuff is like a sponge and will absorb these scents. But basically anything that will seal is good to store snuff in. From glass mason canning jars, water bottles with a big mouth, baby food jars, icebox coolers, military ammo cans, glass jars like the kind that scented candles come in with the sealed lid.
I tried to develop a dedicated snuff humidor a while back, but found that Kilnar jars work just as well and were much cheaper. The only real benefit from a humidor is you can mature a snuff (change and enrich the flavour) where as a kilnar jar keeps the snuff the same for years as long as it's stored in a cool, dark place.
