yep. sp is great. feels somehow very old-fashioned and soothing. but somehow a bit too dry for me mostly and tends to get stall when moistened.
i never actually tried an "sp" labelled snuff.. but i guess toque original and tom buck are worthy specimen? what about high toast 20 (wilsons) somehoe i detect a likeliness to the above mentioned snuffs.
I think sp is a bit sweeter then the snuff you mentioned. And high dry toast is way way more dry and hay like then sp wich has some floral notes in my opinion.
It does stand for Spanish.. if i remember correctly it was originally a snuff plundered from Spanish ships actually the first arival of it had been on a ship that had been blasted by cannons and the snuff put out the fires .. the snuff was pilfered and a company stared selling it ... course thats just one story :)
I go with the spanish story, in the old snuff firm inventories it was written down as Sp. The other suggestion is that the name stands for 'Sheffield Pride' as the majority of this type of snuff was and is made in Sheffield. That said, we only have the initials in old stock books and nothing more substantial written down so it could mean something else.
I think the simple, long forgotten, book keepers abreviation is the reality though - Spanish.
I don't know, but my all day snuff is pretty much either some type of SP (TomBuck, Top Mill, Queen's SS, Best SP, Toque Original) or HDT of some type- either wilson or F&T.
