When I heard they were empty, I sent 200g of Peanut butter and 200g of Blueberry, seamed the right choice of flavours and I didn't even get a thank you!

Ha! That's great. I was almost finished reading the article before I realized it was about the U.S. I just assumed it was about the Parliament or something (even though it said senate repeatedly, duh). That's a funny gesture too, Roderick.

That was really cool of you Roderick. Unfortunately it would be no surprise if they don't fill them, with the manic anti-tobacco nonsense going on. They don't know what they're missing. ;)

    Snuffy,

Here is an entertaining read about snuff use in the Senate. Memoirs of Isaac Bassett Its a good read..

The boxes are still kept filled mainly out of tradition, just they don't ever really need refilling anymore.

You can request more information on Snuff use in the Senate. There is a 2 page pamphlet available upon request titled: "Aprons of Snuff...a Few Words about Snuff and the U.S. Senate".

    Write to:
    Office of Curator
    U.S. Senate
    Washington, D.C. 20510

Fascinating little pamphlet there - do they still fill the boxes? We have the same custom in the UK - with a communal snuff box in the house of commons

snuffster, yes they do, if you read the last sentence of the last paragraph it says: While the custom of taking snuff in the Chamber has all but disappeared, the boxes continue to be filled by the Senate pages.

Not sure if they do still fill them, I was told that they are now empty. If this is so it's a real shame.

Every thing I've read on this says they are still kept filled? But wouldn't know for sure though until I go for a tour. I would love to take a tour & be able to take a pinch from these boxes in the Senate. That would be some great history to live out.

I'd have to think after 9/11 and Daschle offfice anthrax scare they probably don't keep them full anymore and if they do; probably wouldn't let one of us common folk anywhere near them. Don't mean to squash you're senate chamber snuffing dream T.S. just prognosticating......

As far as 2004 they where filled. I don't think they have been refilled in years. Seriously I don't know why anyone here hasn't stated the obvious... Write your Senator! Ask them if they still fill the snuffbox and if they'd be willing to send you a sample. By the way if it's the same 2004 the snuff is terrible!!!
