I finally was able to acquire a large amount of Toque Snuff. I placed an order for every flavor there is in 10g economy bags and 2 bullets, but (again) Costa Rican mail / customs lost it / stole it. I gave it a good month to see if they turned up in the mail, but nothing. However, Roderick was kind enough to re-send my order, only this time he sent me 10 25g tins and 2 bullets! We had to have the package shipped to Miami this time, and have another company forward it to Costa Rica. I expected to pay about $100 worth of shipping and tax when the package came through customs, but for some reason they either overlooked it or didn't know what it was, cause I was only charged $6.45. Amazing.
Now, when I started snuffing I was all about menthol snuffs. But that's perhaps because I barely even tried the other kinds. This Toque order has completely changed my outlook on non-menthols. I now finally had the chance to really experience what everyone's talking about. And I gotta tell you, Toque is simply the best.
I particularly loved Toffee, Vanilla and Blueberry - they're the ones I've taken the most. They are simply delicious. I am truly amazed, they really smell sweet and have a little sting at first snuff, which I enjoy tremendously. I loved the fact that not all Toque snuffs have the same exact base. Some of them I'm sure share the same natural tobacco grind and texture, but there is variance. I think there are 3 different kinds in all - not sure. But I loved to have variety with maintained level of quality all across the flavors.
Peanut Butter... one I was looking forward to sample. Seriously, I thought it was funny to make a peanut butter snuff, and expected weird results. Well let me tell you it's very well achieved too. Not overpowering, mildly sweet but also a bit salty. It reminds me of creamy peanut butter!
Toque Menthol and Peppermint are very well done too. They're not OVER-mentholated, which seems to be the problem with Wilson's. A perfect balance between grind, flavor and texture.
I still haven't fully experienced Chocolate, Espresso, Natural and Original but I liked them at all. It was refreshing to be able to get some coffee flavor from snuff. I had first tried Irish Coffee from Wilson's, but that was weird. It didn't really smell like coffee, and the base had something strange which would give me gag reflex when I took it. This happened with Wilson's Vanilla too... not sure what it is but I couldn't bring myself to enjoy these at all. I ended up giving them to my brothers. Toque Espresso is a lot more like what I was after: a fresh, sharp burst of coffee. Perfect.
At least 6 out of 10 tins smelled like strong ammonia, which I'm told is a sign of how fresh the snuff is. That wasn't a problem: I laid out 10 sheets of paper, properly spaced from each other and dumped the contents of each can on a separate sheet. Then I spread it across the surface so as to have enough contact with air. Left it like that for maybe 6 hours, and now they are all PERFECT. Simply perfect. Well-balanced, the right amount of moist, and still tasting super fresh.
I have to say I am delighted by Toque in every possible way. The product, the service, even the quality of the tins. They are a lot bigger than I expected them but still manageable. Oh, and one thing I found sublime: Toque tins are not over-filled. When unscrewing the cap, I usually have to be very careful not to spill any precious snuff... but with Toque, the snuff is carefully packed, and flat on the top. No chance of spilling this unless you really try.
Thank you Roderick for helping me get your wonderful product. Your service is superior, and I'm looking forward to show your goods around. Perhaps there is interest from tobacco lovers and we can have more Costa Ricans using your delicious snuff.
I agree. Thanks for the snuff! I received mine while I was away on business. Nice to come home to! Original is one of the best SP's I've ever tasted. I think it will be my new standard SP. Natural is just plain good. I love it. Can use it all day and not get over saturated. Espresso is great. For me, it is just a subtle taste and can really still taste the tobacco flavor. I think the texture and moisture level is perfect. Not clogging stuff. Good job! I'd like to see a complex, smoky flavored toque or maybe something similar to Gin and Tonic with the Juniper flavor since G&T is supposedly not being produced anymore...
Toque deserves to go the same way asWilsons - still going strong in 200 years. It also took me a while to realise how good it is, but I am a complete convert now. Vanilla is just out of this world. Iv'e also introduced it to a few folk at work.
I didn't take to Toque initially either snuffster. The ammonia smell in the samples turned me off of it. I got espresso and natural samples and I had a hard time distinquishing them since they weren't labeled. But I heard such great things about chocolate that I decided to try some. Free shipping was a big plus too. Since I got my Chocolate and blueberry I am a total convert.
Yeah, that ammonia smell is weird, but I think has to do with how fresh it is -its easy to air it and get rid of it but Ive found it naturally goes as you repeatedly open the can to take a pinch
Funny thing is I actually enjoy the Natural and Chocolate with a bit of the ammonia scent still with it. The Peanut Butter though needs to be aired to completely remove that scent, ammonia and peanut butter is not all that pleasant.
Yes Bob, the Amonia relates to really fresh snuff and has been debated on here a couple of times. Should we hold off sending out until it has completely aired or do members want really fresh snuff? Right now most appear to want it as fresh as they can get it!
Hi Roderick, I would say keep it as fresh as possible. I have found that the snuff naturally airs anyway because you either keep opening the tin for a pinch or to fill a snuff box. I've had a can of vanilla for about a week now and fill my snuff box (thanks Patrick) once a day - the ammonia smell has all but gone. In any case, I don't find you get any ammonia aroma in the nose.
Would a brief few words about this on the website be in order?
Small 10g tins will be available by the weekend with five new flavours: Absinthe, Cherry, Raspberry, Grapefruit and St. Clements (orange & lemon). Two more flavours will be ready in two weeks time.
Looking forward to the Absinthe flavor, and I should have ordered more of the original as that will go quick. For me, the best is original now. A close second is natural. I would still like to see your version of Gin and Tonic, since they are not going to make it anymore and it is very good.
My opinion is to wait until the ammonia is gone. I personally didn't notice any ammonia smell at all, but I would just wait so that you don't have to explain it. I have gotten that smell from other companies snuff, and yes it does go away after a few days rest. Still...better not to have to explain the smell to people that may not understand. They might just smell it and write off the snuff because of it. My opinion only...
No Roderick your not being biased the Absinthe is the most amazing snuff I’ve ever tried. It’s now my every day snuff. I highly recommend you guys try it you won’t be disappointed.
Shooter, its not available to the general public just yet.
I'm with snuffster, it airs out just fine in the natural opening and closing of the tin during pinches or filling a snuff box. The ammonia really doesn't bother me at all anyway, it kind of adds a nice little kick. I still just snuff away, the fresher the better. Leaving it open or dumped out just puts it at risk of loosing too much freshness. By the way, the new lid gaskets are great.
absinthe does it contain thujone???? I hate the ammonia smell loathe it. If I had not heard about it half my orderer would have been in the trash can. I think know it about it makes it fine. I've said it before but I think toque orders or at least new orders should have the ammonia warning with them, especialy since it is not the healtheist thing to ingest (don't think the amount in fresh snuff matters really but none the less). Knowing that toque isn't run by idiots that can't seem to keep from spilling cleaning supplies into their snuff really helps with repeat sales.
Traditional Absinthe contains Thujone that is released from the Wormwood in the manufacturing process. The Absinthe that Van Gogh and people of that time would have drunk had a very high Thujone content. Virtually all of the modern brands have little or no Thujone and in France - where a Thujone controlled version has just been made legal - it is tightly controlled.
BTW,. from academic stuff I've read on the net, it seems to be a myth that it causes any kind of halucination. This urban myth probably stems from the fact that some of it is 60% ABV. Ive had traditional Absinthe - one country still makes it - and it was a great, strong drink - but no halucinations took place, but one motherfucker of a headache the next day!!
I have been drinking a lot of Absinthe in the last couple of months and have to admit I love the new French 'Absent' at 57% you have to be careful. It will be available online by friday.
thojune is a stimulant and sometimes mixing the right stimulant with a lot of alchool will make some interesting effects. Plus don't forget that the drinks of that era could drink most of us under the table which if they did not have a high tolerance to thojune but a high alchool tolerance the effect would be way diffrent for them then any of us. In fact the only people I've known who've noticed an interesting thojune effect have been heavy (read total achoolics to an unimaginable degree) drinkers. Who've noticed not hallucinations but a certain clearity that in it's own way combined with extreme alchool intoxication is a psychodelic (something that reveals aspects of the psyche not something that causes hallucinations). They've described the diffrence as being primarly that the shitty poem they scribbled on a napkin when they couldn't walk turned out legible and intellectualy cohernet yet more intune with the emotional levels that one reaches when intoxicated (so instead of just saying I hate people who wear green hates, they could lucidly explain why). So personaly I think the debunking of absinthes power is bunk because it isn't even looking in a situation that is in any way similar to the situation that it was given such high praises from. Or damn I'd love to share some real absinthe and some good snuff.
