This is a light brown, demi-gros snuff with medium nicotine - basically the standard Wilsons flour that many of their snuffs are based on. The sherry flavour is very light and probably most users would be unable to distinguish sherry in a blind tasting, but the flavour is distinct - if not immediately recognisable - and is very pleasant. The most accurate description I could give would be a slightly tart, berry like flavour. If you spend a day in it's company you could find yourself falling in love with it and when I got my half-pound jar I ended up using it exclusively until I got to the last 50g or so. At which point I made a half and half blend with some WoS No 20 toast, which proved to be a good move as it gave some character to what I consider to be a very undistinguished and misleadingly named toast (it tastes exactly like an SP). So, it is also a useful blending snuff and would rejuvenate any plain, medium snuff that had been allowed to dry out and lose flavour. If you had a small amount of snuff that did not warrant an attempt at re-hydration I could see this bringing it back to a useable level without the need to add water as the sharp flavour would breathe some character into it . This is a good snuff to have in your collection and would suit a rotation that had SP, toast or US Scotch snuffs dominant in it.

4.5 out of 5.

In the nose this has a complex taste and I suspect a cocktail of wines & spirits are in here. Also is delivers a good nicotine hit.

A premium grade indeed and a snuff that wont disappoint and ideal for the beginner and experienced. Who cares if we don't know, and my never find out who the snuff maker is. It's someone who knows his snuff, and experienced at blending.

No separate Dean Swift category, so I've put this in the WoS category because they make it.

This stuff is quite extraordinary. It looks and feels identical to Brunswick - black, moist, coarse ground. But the scent... The first thing I got when I opened the tin was creosote - it smelled like the stuff you put on your fence. Heaven knows what it actually is, but that's what it smells like. Once taken, there is more going on. It definitely has menthol in it - there is that 'cooling' effect, although as a flavour it's not that obvious. The creosote (or whatever it is) is there too, but there is also clove in abundance. The overall effect is a bit crazy, really. It's not going in the bin, but I'm not sure how often it will come out of the drawer. Still, if you have a little space in your next Mr Snuff order, stick a tin on the list just for the experience!

★★★★
The fourth offering from Abraxas, Dragun is significantly different from the earlier three. Rather than being dark and moist it is a pale yellow brown and it is relatively dry. The grind however is still medium coarse, thus rather proving my earlier point that dry snuffs aren't always fine in grind. The grind and colour remind me of the Dutch Mettaijer Snuif and also of the fabled Spanish Jewel but the flavouring is quite different to either. Mettaijer has a vinegary top note while the Jewel was cheesy and sweet and Dragun is spicy and sweet. A curious combination perhaps but it works well for me.

The notes on the Mr Snuff site mention several spices as being in the flavouring for Dragun, chilli, cinnamon and nutmeg, and I'm not going to argue about any of those. All seem to be present, but the initial scent I get is of something much sweeter. A hint of apples and raisins with cinnamon perhaps, or something along those lines. I find the chilli tends to makes itself known as that initial sweetness fades. Finally the tobacco itself comes forward coupled with a heft nicotine kick. Very satisfying and very moreish, even if it does tend to make me sneeze, just like the Club and the Cerise Connoisseur! I suspect that, while the grind of Dragun is finer than that of Club and Cerise, it's the dryness that starts me sneezing (though high dry toast doesn't have that effect on me). For the latter reason alone I'll give it four stars rather than five, though 4.5 would be more accurate. Another must try snuff from Abraxas.

★★★★

My take on the Abraxas Cerise Connoisseur. This review will be posted on my blog later.

Another excellent snuff from Abraxas, the Cerise Connoisseur was the third to be released. Like the Abraxas Club, it is dark, very coarse, moist and rich in flavour. Fresh from the 15g glass jar it needed some airing to reduce the expected ammonia but that is never a problem. One whiff of that smell tells me a snuff is as fresh as it gets so all is well. Like the other Abraxas snuffs this one is also described as a premium sort and the price reflects that. Even at that price this is a wonderful snuff, positively decadent in its depth of flavour.

The initial scent blast is of cherries of course, as the name proclaims. In fact leaving a jar open nicely scents the entire room! But the flavour is not just of cherries. It's more of a cherry brandy with the alcoholic liqueur adding an extra dimension to the overall experience. There is also something else lurking in the recesses of this blend, something somewhat bitter-sweet which I can't quite place. I'm sure as time goes on with this snuff I'll find more flavours just waiting to be discovered.

The only drawback for me, once again, as with the Club and Dragun snuffs from Abraxas, is that the very coarse grind tends to make me sneeze a lot and once again, that's my only reason for only giving this excellent snuff four stars rather than five.

I am snuffing a new snuff today, Abraxas Club. This is, without a doubt, the most complex snuff I have ever tried. It is a course, dark brown, moist snuff. The top note is brandy, and quite a good brandy. Under the brandy is a nutty almond flavour mixed with tobacco goodness, and every once in a while the scent of an old fashioned barber shop peeks through. This snuff shows what can be done when snuff is produced in small batches by hand. Nigel puts a lot of pride in his product. This one is a winner.

While it's a strong scented snuff, with a medium towards fine grind, it's actually quite soft and relatively easy on the nose, even quite comforting (ironically, I found Wilsons' Extra Crumbs of Comfort quite harsh!) Some people describe Strasbourg as a floral snuff, some as a flavoured SP - I would say it's in a league of its own.

Apricot & Menthol is a new product from Wilsons - I believe it's only been available since late 2011. Fresh from the tin, it's quite thick and fairly moist, and as an enthusiast of Wilsons' menthol snuffs of this type, I found it to be a very welcome addition to the range.

As expected, the menthol is relatively strong, but not overly so (unless you are a 'menthol intolerant' snuffer!) Compared to Poschl's Gawith Apricot, I would say that Wilsons' Apricot & Menthol has more menthol, and the apricot aroma is a lot sweeter, and arguably more instantly 'apricoty'. Overall I prefer Gawith Apricot, but Wilsons' own take on apricot and menthol is similiar enough, yet also distinctly different enough, to make it a damn good snuff in its own right.

I've tried plenty of Wilsons snuffs (although still not near the vast epic range they currently have available), and their 'menthol with something' types often tend to be my favourites. Honey Menthol is quite coarse and almost kind of sticky in texture. The pairing of powerful menthol and gorgeous, rich honey makes it a bit reminiscent of a certain kind of medicinal lozenge that one takes to soothe a sore throat!

One of the things I appreciate about this snuff is how it really stays with you after taking it - and sometimes it takes a while for the scent to fully develop in the nose - which is also true of Wilsons' excellent Vanilla Ice. (I like the lasting effect of these snuffs more than those which only smell nice for the first few seconds then quickly fade into nothing). If you're after a honey snuff, this is a sweet treat not to be missed!

This is no doubt the smokiest American scotch snuff I have had to date. It comes in a plastic container with a snap down lid that keeps it fresh. It is dry and very fine milled typical of most scotches. I would say that it has a high nicotine hit and a moderate burn, followed by a nice mesquite campfire scent. It reminds me of Bruton snuff but is a darker brown with more smoke flavor. A slow and gentle pinch for a beginning snuffer, this can easily make you cough. Square is an occasional snuff for me and one of my favorite scotches. I highly recommend it if you enjoy a strong nic hit with heavy smokiness.

Ice Liquorice is another great mentholated snuff from Wilsons, and another case of living up to what it says on the tin. The menthol level is quite strong, but the liquorice is upfront and dominating. I get a kind of 'fizzy' sensation when taking this snuff, reminding me of fizzy coated thin liquorice sticks or little cola bottle sweets. It has a similiar grind to many of Wilsons' other snuffs of this ilk, so it can get a bit clumpy, but that's not a bad thing.

The closest comparison to another snuff I can make is to Poschl's Lowen-Prise. I can't decide which one I prefer overall, but if you like one, then you'll probably appreciate the other.

I picked up this little gem from a free sample offered by Mr.Snuff Not having tried an Indian Snuff I was intrigued to know more. The wee vessel arrived in short order and I promptly got into my tiny treasure from the exotic far east.
The first thing I noticed was that the container was quite small, 8grams, a cylinder about the diameter of my thumb, an inch and a quarter high. The outside label has six photos of the founders of the company, hence the name!

I twisted through the paper label and popped the lid off. It was full to the brim with a red rusty powder. It was moist and had a complex menthol aroma. Easy does it as I lifted a small spoonful out and placed a soft moist heap on the back of my hand.
With a gentle sniff I was met with an aromatic spicy menthol. Soft and easy to take. Another spoon doled out and again the wonderful mentholated perfume of Medicated No.66.

The perfume has notes of patchouli and quite possibly sandlewood. There is a note of violet way down in there too, but it could just be my interpretation. This snuff also seems quite high in nicotine. I'm assuming a large percentage of the snuff uses sun cured tobacco, which I understand allows more nicotine to be present in the leaf. Take a good pinch, but I suggest not doubling up that volume too quickly. It could easily lead to head spins.

If you like medium moist menthols, and want a new experience I highly recommend Six Photo Snuff - Medicated No.66.

This... If you can find it, I think it may be out of production. I would suggest trying it if you like peppermint, it has a nice, fresh peppermint flavor(not one bit spearminty!). This I prefer over the WoS which has imo a musty scent- this definitely doesn't. The tobacco itself is rather mild, both in terms of burn and scent- I think it has a high proportion of Virginia. Also I'd say that it was crafted in such a way to be scent-forward, not to emphasize the tobacco itself- you're really just dealing with the mintiness itself which is prominent, but not Altoids strong. The grind is pretty fine and if I recall medium moist, while the color is medium brownish. This can be found in tobacco shops in the US here and there, at least I've seen some in the past year or so.

I'm on my 2nd 10g tin of this snuff. It was one of 15 I ordered the first time I bought snuff online and I had it through the summer, but now that I've tried it in the winter and let the cold air work it's magic I feel able to appreciate it fully even if I can't fully dissect every scent in it and pinpoint every element like Xander or Snuffster. It is medium grind with a fair amount of clumps, moderate nicotine and dark brown just short of the black of Brunswick or Princes. I get a good burst of citrus initially when taking large pinches ( the best way to snuff just about anything unless you have a good size snuff spoon INMHO) it's a moderate bergamot compared to the extreme bergamot concentration of Tom Buck. But the highlight of this is the woody (not quite the cedar of Santo Domingo) mellow tobacco flavor. The cold air of Michigan's Upper Peninsula brings out that woodiness and even sweetness of the tobacco. The citrus takes backseat but lingers with the tobacco flavor beautifully. I just dug this one out after only taking the occasional pinch and I'm glad I did. I've been snuffing almost a year now and with developed technique in addition to vision loss right before I started snuffing I'm getting better at feeling flavors (my other senses are really compensating for my poor vision) and falling in love with a lot of snuffs. This is one snuff that I can give 9/10 at least. I have to go back out into the cold right now, but with my nose full of Best Dark (a name it lives up to if you ask me) it's going to be enjoyable.

Love at first pinch. I don't usually go for sweet snuffs and I have only tried a handful of US snuffs but this is gorgeous. The snuff comes in a pasteboard tube which holds about 30g - good utilitarian packaging, easy to spoon into a snuffbox or just pinch from the can. The snuff is a light, golden brown and has the texture and appearance of a High Dried Toast. It is very light and penetrating so if you have not got your pinching technique mastered you need to go very, very carefully. Even after taking snuff for getting on for 40 years, the first pinch shot straight to the back of my throat; but even as I was picking myself off the ground I knew I had found a snuff that will be part of my rotation for many years. I can not think of anything bad or even neutral about this snuff - it is gorgeous. Straight away you get an amazing honey/syrup flavour backed up by a very satisfying does of nicotine. Of course, finely ground snuff will always deliver on the nicotine front because of the sheer surface area in a product like this, but nonetheless it hits the spot. Like all very fine, dry snuffs it is a great head clearer without the re-bound congestion that a menthol or medicated snuff gives - this type of snuff is great for if you have a head-cold.

All in all I would say this a superb snuff, nothing fancy in either itself or it's packaging, but a real working man's pick me up. Because of its grind it will quickly show the deficiencies in any snuff box - because it will find any weak point in the closure and leak out. What you need is something like a Pat Collins box with a perfect seal, which is how I am using mine. 10 out of 10.

American Snuff Company (Conwood) W.E. Garrett Scotch

User:

Date:

Rating:

Dunnyveg

11-09-2011 05:10PM

Grind: Extra Fine

Moisture: Very Dry

Nicotine: Huge

I have a love-hate relationship with this snuff. What I love about this snuff is that it has very high nicotine levels with a relatively mild burn. It also isn't as smokey and strong-tasting as some of the other scotches. This snuff is also widely available in the US, and relatively inexpensive. I use the scotch-type snuffs to create my own blends. This works best with strongly flavored snuffs, such as McChrystal's or Wilson's, but not so well with Toque and other less flavorful brands. Snuff blending with Levi Garrett not only allows for the creation of an almost unlimited number of combinations, but adds kick and lessens the price. The biggest thing I hate about the scotch-style snuffs are the high levels of TSNA's, which are the result of the flu-curing that imparts the smokey taste. It would also be nice if this snuffwere a bit more coarse and moist. The only way I've found to use this snuff without going into coughing or sneezing spasms is to fill my lungs with air and then gently sniff while holding the back of my tongue tightly against the top of my throat. A fine, useful product, but not without its problems.

User:

Date:

Rating:

Pike Mopers

07-21-2010 12:05AM

Grind: Fine

Moisture: Very Dry

Nicotine: High

Pure American deliciousness. Very smokey note when the container is opened, and an even more pronounced and tasty smoke flavor in the nose. Exceptionally dry, this snuff ends up all over my black shirts after I take a pinch. Long-lasting flavor and lovely nicotine hit. I will definitely keep this readily available, cheap snuff on hand at all times.

User:

Date:

Rating:

Xander

03-18-2010 02:41AM

Grind: Extra Fine

Moisture: Very Dry

Nicotine: High

Certainly this is the easiest snuff to find in most retail establishments in the US. Its fine and dry, even as scotches go. It packs a very nice nicotine punch. The smokey-barbecue aroma is less pronounced in this than in most strong scotches, but it is more here than in the plain scotches. Although it is very smooth for a scotch, its not really good for beginners, but it is loved by most advanced snufftakers. I recommmend getting the bottles of this (known as Levi Garrett) instead of the cardboard tubes. The bottled version seems to be more airtight and generally stores better. Bulk snuff generally tastes better than small tins anyway.

User:

Date:

Rating:

jstar

03-01-2010 06:31PM

Grind: Fine

Moisture: Dry

Nicotine: High

Im new to snuffing " Only 3 days in" I bought W.E Garrett and Rooster.. I compared the two and W.EGarrett is alot better for my personal Prefference. Here are the reasons why. When I sniff W.E Garrett theres a nice BBQ smell and taste but most of all I feel a strong pinch in my throat that I like alot . Its similar to smoking a cigarette when it hits you in the back of the throat...A pinch of this stuff in each nostral gives me a hit equivalent to a marlboro red. If your an ex smoker like I am you might like that.. With Rooster , It delivered a slightly bigger nicotine rush but I felt that it lacked flavor and smell and didnt have a strong enough pinch or burn in the throat when I swallow... Now im not sure if your suppose to feel a pinch at all in the throat but i persoanlly like it that way...

User:

Date:

Rating:

Red Star

10-05-2009 12:25PM

Grind: Extra Fine

Moisture: Dry

Nicotine: High

First of all I must say, the cardboard container this snuff comes in, is quite ugly and unpractical to carry it with you. And even the small cans come in insane sizes for a snuff that high in nicotine and strong in flavour. Well, there must be some folks around using this in high quantities, I guess. The flavour is very smokey and pronounced, still slightly mellower than the Rooster. The smokey flavour is what sets the U.S. scotches apart from the english high dry toasts. And the overall stronger nicotine hit. The nicotine in this one seems to be strong, but manageable. Just high enough, to satisfy without kicking you out of your shoes. I must say I prefer the HDT´s over the scotches, as the smokieness has a tendency to overshadow the tobacco flavour. Still, this is a very good example of a well done scotch.

User:

Date:

Rating:

ibook7537

10-03-2009 10:34PM

Grind: Fine

Moisture: Dry

Nicotine: High

This Is Snuff. Powdered Tobacco for your nose. It is fine, dry and, filled with nicotine. This was my first snuff all I could find. I have had 2 cigs and thought they were like breating warm air, thats it no flavor, no nicotine, just blaaa. So I thougth I had a high tolerance for nicotine, NOPE, this stuff was the stuff that tought me about Vitamin N. Try spinning around in a circle for ~20 mins and then try to stand straight is what this stuff was like the first time. A nicotine Buzz in a snap. It is kind of hard to take in that your throat will get coated the first time if you have no idea what to do other than a sniff in the nose but with time it will be easily mastered. Its got a wonderful BBQ note that is a little less pronounced then square but for someone looking for a good scotch snuff give it a go it should be easy enough to find at a drug store even if the guy thinks your nuts.

User:

Date:

Rating:

Mr Snuffypants

08-23-2009 01:05AM

Grind: Extra Fine

Moisture: Very Dry

Nicotine: High

This is the one to try, if you feel you have a bit of Cowboy in you. Pleasantly smokey, with a nice rich underlying Tobacco flavour that comes back frequently for a long time after a pinch. Like all the otherAmerican Scotches, it isn't something for novice noses, but for the daring and experienced, it's as clean and satisfying as a whiff of fresh air.

User:

Date:

Rating:

Juxtaposer

05-07-2009 03:00AM

Grind: Extra Fine

Moisture: Very Dry

Nicotine: High

I have the Levi Garrett so I don't feel a need to try this. All I can add is that this is a an extremely dryAmerican Scotch and takes a lot of of practice to get used to it. It has a smokey taste to it and mixes well with Kendal Brown or any other natural tasting blends. It even mixes well with Toque Menthol if you want spice it up some more. I used this once in a daily rotation and ingested it all day on an empty stomach. The nicotine hit was was unbelievable and left me feeling like I had been using diet pills all day. This stuff is no joke and can really jack your world if your are looking for a high nicotine snuff. So far i have only tried this and rooster out of the american scotches and i would say this has the most smoky flavor out of the too however i like the flavor of the rooster better here is my reasoning. garret has the smell of and old campire pit on a cold day after it has rained where as the rooster has more of a currently burning or just went out smell. i guess the only way to sum it up is that the W.E. Garret has kind of a cold smell compared to the warm smell of rooster which i personally prefer. Smoky and satisfying, W.E. follows only Rooster in strength and satisfaction, but with a deeper BBQ note. In a blind taste test, I would most certainly mistake this one for it's more revered brother, Levi. Same color, moisture, flavor, nic hit and finish. If not for a different name and packaging, I would think it the same snuff! As a matter of fact, it might be, only the name Levi is used for the largest size selection. Regardless, this is my second favorite Scotch, or third if indeed a differentsnuff than brother Levi, four and a half smoky BBQed snootfuls for W.E.
